HELP Shift stuck after WP overhaul, Yanaha C30 2cyl

I just overhauled the water pump on my Yamaha CV30ELD 2 cylinder, and now that it's all back together, it is stuck in forward gear. All the linkages and cables move freely ... it is the shift rod that disappears into the lower unit that is stuck. What have I done, and what can I do about it? Many thanks, I'm trying to actually use the thing this weekend!!!

take lower unit back off <br />and with shiftlever in neutral ensure shift rod in neutral then re install lower unit.
