1992 Yamaha ProV 150
P150TLRQ on a Ranger R97 fish and ski

Having oil injection problems. Boat mounted tank pump is operating. I am able to manually pump oil into the motor mounted tank via the manual toggle switch. Oil will NOT pump automatically. Oil cap float sensor has been replaced. What else could this be. Oil level reaches low level line and the buzzer comes on. Is it the CDI unit? Seems to be an electrical issue, all mechanicals is working. Oil is being pumped to carbs.

Just bought motor and boat, anything else to watch on this motor? Thanks.

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

Check out the wiring harness between the two tanks. Actually where it plugs into the engine harness to where it plugs into the boat mounted tank.

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

If the harness checks ok, check the sensor in the tank in the boat. Sometimes the gauge will show yellow even if tank is full, but not all the time. If this sensor goes bad the pump will not pump unless the switch is used, this is to make boater notice that he's almost out of oil and to refill or get back to shore.

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

Ok stil have buzzer warning issue coming on. Oil pump brings oil in manually with switch. System will not pump automatically.
Parts replaced. ....
Oil sensor on motor tank.
sensor in boat tank
CDI unit.
Harness between boat tank and motor seems to be ok.

ONe thing i did notice is that there is a plug inside engine cover and main harness that is not plugged in to anything. I believe it is for the yamaha gauges that I do not have. IS this plug for the yellow / red warining lamps??

I am guessing that it is for the warning lamps, being that these 4 wires are left unplugged here could this be causing the system to not work?

Thanks...
See first post for engine details and info.

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

Have you tested your trim gauge sender for correct operation? That determines the transfer of oil on later V6 motors.

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

jerjer
did you actually follow the test sequence seahorse sent ya? yamaha products work well but get pricey to just throw parts at. its a very very simple system to work with all the manual switch does is provides the ground path manually instead of through the CDI. so we know the engine pan connector is working as is everything downstream of the engine. your problem is between the connector at the cowl with the blue, brown, black and black/red wires and the oil level sensor in the engine tank. if you follow the test sequence I do belive you will find the trim sender is part of the sequence. nowhere did I ever see a replace parts and retest.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

on 1990 to 1995 v6 if the trim sender is inoperative it can cause no oil transfer by the CDI.I dont have time right now but give me a few hours and I will type it straight from the traing guide for the master tech program.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

i had the same problem here.
remote tank couldn't keep up with main tank.

fix was:
the little one way valve in the back of the remote tank{remove tank, it's down near the electric motor} was plugged up.
a quick blowout with carb cleaner solved the problem.
mike

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

OK, I bought the boat at a dealer on consignment. So they are working with me on the issue. They called me today, and told me that the CDI unit that they installed yesterday tests out bad. Have u guys ever heard of a part like that DOA...?? They are ordering a new one and will try another one next week. Yamaha tech support appently told them to test the unit.

THe other thing that I was thinking is that I am not using the Yamaha gauges. They are Teleflex. Would the open connector inside the motor for these gauge warning lamps affect the system to not work?

At this point im hoping the CDI that thye had was bad and another one will do the trick....

I know all of you are busy,,,but is there an order of test procedures to go over again if Im still down... If you could type up a list of test procedures to try that would be great.

Here is a summary again of what its doing and what was done so far....
1 Motor is using oil...The motor mounted tank will hit the low level line and the buzzer comes on. Will not send oil from boat tank automatically.
2 Manual switch DOES work....
3. Motor tank sensor unit is replaced.
4. Boat tank and sensor, pump is new last year.
5. CDI with the oil control module was replaced, but part supposedly is DOA...

6 Will try new CDI next week....

Thanks!!!! for all your help...Rodbolt thanks for yoru expertise,,,,,

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

Your dealer, as long as he is authorized and sends techs to the annual service seminars, receives a yearly Yamaha Marine Technical Guide. It is between 3/4" and 1" thick and contains all kinds of information that a tech needs often.

In each issue is a Precision Blend oil test and explanation sequence, along with a troubleshooting guide. I don't have the 2004 book handy, but the 2002 book has the info on page 1-28 and the troubleshooting guide on page 1-39. Perhaps your dealer will show you one of his copies, or perhaps he doesn't know about it.

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

Hi all..

Just got off the phone with Dealer..Still no fix.
Tech is not Yamaha certified. They must not have the tach manuals. Im not sure what else to do. I can't take it somewhere else\, because I bought the boat consigment and they agreed to fix this issue wiht the guy i bought it from paying for this. So if i take it else where, i woudl probably ahve to pay.

They were checking the trim sensor today supposeldly. The sensor on the motor tank is new. the CDI with the oil control module is new. the boat tank sensor is good. What else coudl this be...

THey are checking the trim sensor now. Is there a way to test this???

Coudl some one forward me some full instructions on trouble shooting the oil system??? I need to try and do something, Is there a troubel shoot list that I can use to help on this, please advise.

Here is a recap.. Boat uses oil just fine. level hits low mark and buzzer comes on....
pump does not come on to pump in more oil automatically....manual swithc does work......

PLEASE help im at wits end with dealer and boat.....
Thanks in advance for your help......

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

dude we have told you how and where. the CDI rarely goes bad and is very expensive. but if the trim position sender on the transom bracket is inoperative it can interfere with the ability for the engine to transfer oil. if I were you I would ask for my money back. the yamaha precision blend iws wonderful and works very well. untrained techs and idiotic comments like "Delete oil injection system & use pre-mix.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posts: 5 | From: florida | Registered: Aug 2004 | tend to screw it all up. in the bass and walleye magazine there is a good article on trouble shooting the system or like seahorse says go buy the tech service guide. if you have monkeys with no manuals tell them to keep the boat and go find another.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

hopefully the last update.....

I spoke with them again tonite...they have found the problem. Turns out it is the trim sending unit in the gauge that is on the boat. 92 yamaha motor is not compatible with the new gauge package that is on the boat. Motor trim senderdoes not work wiht the gauges that are on the boat. THey are installing the digital Yamaha tach and trim, oil waringn combination gauge. They unpugged the teleflex gauge and the system worked like a charm.....Apparently yamaha phone support has verified this as awell. The 92s apparently need to have that Yamaha combination digital gauge package...
So they are takeing out the Teleflex Tach and trim gauge and installing the Yamaha combination package...

I am just glad it is resolved....Thanks for the help here, this is a great tool to have!!!

Re: Yamaha Oil Injection Problem

I bet it's the computer. On my '87 I had the same issue and I change the Float/switch but NG. Fortunately, the earlier engines had a separate module that I replaced. Not sure but I heard that they incorperated this module onto the main circuit board. That's what the Parts guy said when i bought mine. "your lucky it's only $125 the new motors , it's all one big board, you're looking at $500.'
