Boat almost sank!!

Ok, here is the story. I purchased this 18ft jon boat with a 25 HP motor in the beginning of February 2006. I was waiting for a semi warm day to take it to the local lake and try it out. So on Wed February 15th the temp was in the upper 50's so I thought I would take the boat out for a trail run. Well when I first got the lake I backed it down into the water and went to back it off the trailer, that is when I noticed water leaking from two small holes where someone had removed a transducer from a fish finder, so I pulled the boat back out of the water by this time some water had acculmated in the rear of the boat, so I thought I would take the plug out to drain the water. I then used some putty to temporarily clog the transducer hole's ( after all I was only going to be out for a few min). So I then launched the boat parked the truck and took off in the boat. It was running great.... I noticed some water building in the rear of the boat.... so I thought it would be a good idea to head back to the dock. About half way the water was about 6 - 7 inches deep (and gaining ) in the rear of the boat... and with water and my weight more water was starting to come over with each wave. So I shut off the motor and walked to the front of the boat to even out the weight... There was about 3-4 inches of water covering the entire boat floor!! I was about 20 - 30 feet away from the dock.. and I could not go back to the back of the boat because my weight and the weight of the water would have sank the boat right there. So when the wind had pushed me within 15 feet or so of the dock... came the decision to jump ship and swim/walk the boat back to the dock. Keep in mind this is in mid February in southern IL... the water was COLD! Luckily the avg depth of the lake is around 5ft (Horseshoe lake IL) and where I jumped in was a little over waist deep. So here I am walking the half flooded boat back to the dock. I got the truck and had to push the boat on the trailer while still in 3 feet of water. Hooked it up to the winch and out it came. Once the boat was out of the water... I realized my mistake...I had never put the drain plug back in when I pulled it out to fix the small hole... Below are the pictures of the boat while it was on the boat ramp with the water draining. Sorry for the poor quality.. they where taken with my camera phone. Luckily no one was hurt and nothing was lost. But I was very cold, and learned a VERY valuable lesson!

Pictures
http://www.scotthogle.com/water.htm

If it happens again go faster and the boat may drain itself. Glad you made it back safely. PS You now have earned your FTP patch. :D

Lesson two: Even small boats should have a pump aboard.

Man, that brings back bad memories when I see that stern full of water. I had that happen many moons ago on a small runabout. Same deal. The plug! Not a good feeling. But I was real sure to install a pump on it right after that. BTW, it does work if you go fast. Empties right out. Just have to get the plug in while the boats movin'. Neat trick if you're by yourself, but it can be done. (Don't ask me how I know that!) :D Like SwampNut said, I now can't imagine any boat, however small, without one. That could have turned into a real disaster. Good job getting yourself and the boat back to shore, even if it meant getting wet...

Yes the boat will have pump after I rebuild it, I was thinking that would have been a quick test run..lol This is one of two projects I have going on right now. I purchased the 18ft from a dealer off Iboats as a project boat to rebuild.

Glad you were able to get back to shore and didn't loose her.

I did the same thing on my first boat. I noticed the water when I opened the engine hatch to check for fumes before starting. I too had to go into the water (I think it was November) and put the plug in. COOOOOOOLD.

I know how you feel about sinking one of those. A few years ago a few buddies and I rented an alum. fishing boat with a 25 hp OB. We hit high winds and waves after leaving our quiet fishing cove. The lake had been closed but we didn't know. A few waves over the bow and she got real sluggish real fast. Ended up sinking just off shore of the island and we puller her in. They came looking for us and got us off the island. ALSO COOOOOOOOLD

Re: Boat almost sank!!

I had a similar thing happen in December. I was taking my new prize, '93 Cajun I had just bought, for her first outing at Joe Pool in DFW, Texas. I made it just past the marina and made the first turn and felt something weird and the sound of water sloshing. Opened the ski hatch and had about 6-8 inches water. Ran it back to the ramp and loaded it fast as I could, which was intersting being the first time and the boat was sitting really low by this point. Pulled it up the ramp, all the 3/4 ton 4x4 could muster, and watched the water drain for about 15 minutes. Come to find out that all of the hose clamps were rusted and the livewell drain had come lose. Guess what 12 things I replaced that weekend......

A good story with a happy ending. Good thing that you weren't in the midle of the lake, it could have turned out quite different.

So how did it run? Get a Tempo Automatic Drain Plug. Water will go out but not come in. IBoat sells them.

Re: Boat almost sank!!

I have never done that. Had to pull back up the ramp before and put the plug in though.
I have left the plug in one too many times though. If you get home and see the trailer tonque pointing toward the sky...it's just as bad.
Time for an automatic bilge pump. Just be carefull when you wash it. Make your way all the way around to the back, lean down to scrub the bottom of the transom and hear a "zzzzzzzz".....Look up just in time to get a taste of whatever was in the back of your boat...ICK!!

Make yourself a bailer out of a milk jug or clorox bottle. Then include it in your "must have" list along with oars (or a paddle) and your lifejackets... and don't leave home without it. You can bail faster than water can come in the plug hole... don't ask me how I know. ;)
