motor suggestion for 14' Lund

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 1984 Lund 14' in great condition for a song. This is a tiller model and isn't very heavy. I don't know the exact model. The plate says 35hp motor. My question is: I have the opportunity to buy a nice 1988 Evinrude 15hp. How would that motor do on this boat with 2 people? Thanks!

As long as you are never in a hurry it will be marginal at best.Personally ,I would go bigger.If you can get the 15 for a very good price ,you will have no trouble getting your money back if it is not to your liking.Small motors sell pretty easily.Charlie

I am only basing my answer on what you read at 35hp and assume that is the max.25 would be my minimum.I have a 10ft zodiac which weighs less than 100lbs and I run a 15hp and with 2 people it is fast but I would welcome a few more ponies.Do you know what the 14footer weighs??

25 should be the minimum, jkduab.<br /><br />Almost any planing boat needs 70% of rated power to perform well with a load.<br /><br />Welcome to iboats, and. . .

I put a lot of miles on a 14-foot tin can with a 15. If it's just you, a tackle box & pole, and your dog, you'll be fine. If you bring along two buddies, their tackle & poles, and their dogs, get a 25 or 30.... No one ever complained about having too much power....<br />- Scott

I have a 14' Starcraft (that itself weighs about 255#) with a 20 on it. With a good load (3 people & equip.), it still hauls pretty good; with less weight, it'll fly. It's rated for 30 hp.

Maybe so Scott, but, JRT's need more rooom than most large dogs. And, Chichi's are so noisy you'd need to drag them along with a long ski rope to have any peace at all.

I have two much power.<br /><br />My boat is a 1968 14' FD Alumacraft, 4' 5" beam, with a '04, 40 hp., 2 stroke short shaft.<br /><br />My complaints are....<br />1) I cannot allow anyone else to drive it with that motor on.<br />2) I cannot drive it above 3/4 throttle without good water and wind conditions.<br />3) The motor is heavier than the boat.<br />4) The boat and motor are set up less than optimum for safety.<br />5) It is scary at WOT.<br /><br />The good things....<br />1) I owned the boat since I was 18 and have even more appreciation and respect for it.<br />2) It makes the river seem smaller.<br />3) It makes me very safety conscious.<br />4) It is a thrill to drive.<br />5) I use it more than ever.<br /><br />The boat is rated for 40 hp., but in '68 there weren't tiller steer 59 cu. in. 40 hp. motors. I do not recommend someone to do this, for I have stories to tell of years ago.<br /><br />Never overpower a boat!

I have a 14ft Lund ssv. with a 25hp 2stroke. It is probably the same boat cuz it ways about 270lbs. I have a big setup with steering, controls, huge tank, batteries. I take 3 ppl out with all that gear and it flies. 15hp will be fine for this boat with 2 ppl. no prob. may not fly but will be fine. feel free to msg me.

jkduab - Since you are asking motor suggestion.... For me and my above mentioned 14' boat, small is the best fishing motor. If you are into serious fishing.<br /><br />In '91 I bought a new Evinrude 4 hp. Deluxe motor for the boat. It's a 2 cyl, with full gear shift and all the other bigger motor features. It starts so easy, I want to rope start it in gear and it almost gets the boat on plane. It's a real fishing motor and it makes all the different fishing methods so much easier, especially in the river current. It's mostly my cold weather motor and I mean really cold here in Minnesota.<br /><br />If you're into year-round seasonal fishing. A small motor might be something to consider as a second motor and I wouldn't go bigger than a 6 hp. on your boat. Most die hard fishermen won't go over 10 hp. on their 14' aluminums and these are boats like yours. Because of the need to go slow and the motor is running continually.<br /><br />You don't have to try to compromise on just one motor size on these boats. I also use a 25 hp. motor for my boat. Sometimes I have 4 motors on when I go out. 2 outboards and 2 electric motors (bow and transom). It's nice with the tillers that you can switch motors in only a few minutes.

I have a 15 Evinrude 2 stroke on a 14 ft aluminum boat. My boat is about 100 lbs lighter than your LUND. When I have three adults on board, it's still plenty fast and planes easily. It's a great little motor for fishing. Still small enough to troll smoothly and still portable enough at 74 lbs.
