Hello, I was wanting to know what made an o2 sensor make a ticking noise. If you go to my last post(TICKING IN MOTOR) you will know what I have been through. Last night I cleaned the o2 sensor and housing again. It wasn't to bad but the last time it was ticking and I cleaned it the ticking went away and just came back. The motor is a 2000 but built in 7/99. I read that in 12/99 they changed the design of the sensor to help stop the clogging. My sensors part no. is #oza75-sk2 9f-2.
I don't know if this is the old one but is it time to spend the money and get a new sensor. Any thoughts?

Re: O2 SENSOR

The change was with the orifice that goes from the cylinder into the O2 sensor chamber. It was small and easily clogged with 50:1 break-in premix deposits. The replacement has a bigger hole.

Haven't heard of a noisy O2 sensor before. Can't think of anything that could produce noise, but it has a heating element that I suppose could be baking any oil that might collect on the sensor.

Ever see 41 around by you? Re: O2 SENSOR

Thank's Willy, That's what I thought it was but wasn't sure. That's the part that is getting clogged so I don't if I have the old part or the sensor is gone. That part is about $30 I should just get another one to make sure I have the updated part. And yes I see 41 around. His boat has 3 - 225 h.p. merc's on it. And the S.S. boats have 2 - 300 h.p. on them. It is hard to miss. Thank's

Re: O2 SENSOR

spykept
the sensor draw tubes were changed about 2001. the new tube is thinner to run hotter and burn off carbon. all the holw sizes stayed about the same. the clicking is usually the tube. you may have already damaged a cyl. do a leak down test on #1 cyl. the block and holder changed also about late 2002 or early 2003.
good luck and keep posting

Re: O2 SENSOR

Rodbolt, How do you do a leak down test? I ordered an clymer manual last week and waiting for to come in. Maybe that will help me with this stuff. Also if those parts all changed, should I update all those parts excepted the block?

Re: O2 SENSOR

look at the picture in the tech bulliten and see if your tube is like that. there is no interchangability betweem the o2 sonsor holders and blocks from 2002 to 2003. the holder and engine blocks are machined different
I would reccomend testing the sensor with an ohmeter and the test harness first. the sensor is about 380 dollars
good luck and keep posting

Re: O2 SENSOR

hello
spykept
a leakdown test is a test wher you inject a known pressure of air into a sealed cylinder and maesure the amount of makeup air it takes to maintain that pressure. the results are shown as a percentage of leakge for that cylinder. it is a more accurate measurement than a compression test. what I am looking for is how well are the rings sealing. sometimes the carbon grows out of the drawtube hole and catches on the piston and piston rings causing them to stick and burn. that is what we are looking for.
good luck and keep posting
