I have one of these that quit last summer, it was late in the year and I had no reason to fix it. Took it in at Easter and the marina mech. said the middle cylinder had burned up, and would have to re-bore put oversize piston etc. I asked him haow this could have happened. They could not give me a solid reason, Yamaha would not come to the plate as the warranty was 2 months out.

Botton line parts labor 2600.00

Last Fri. they finally get it back in the water for a test. Now they say that water is getting into the engine oil? WTF... I am at the end of my rope any thoughts how this could have happened.

Last dime Yamaha ever gets out of me.

I wish it was neglect , the motor had regular service and oil changes I suspect an oil pump failure, since they replaced that too, Yamaha doesn't agree.

I'd say it was neclect having it quit last summer and not bringing it in for service until the start of this season. (but I guess you know that already)

Why would it be neglect waiting to have it fixed? It was at the end of the season when it broke. If sjc1 would have taken it in then he would not had a chance to test it on the lake after repair. It would have sat all winter not knowing if it is really fixed. Thats alot of cash to spend for it to sit for 6 months or so. Also if there a warrenty on the repair it would be a waiste to burn up 6 monthes of it while its sitting in the garage. I would have done the same thing

If a water leak (whatever the reason) occurred at the end of the season and it was repaired immediately there might have been minimal damage. If you let a water contaminated engine sit for a season, undoubtably the damage was much greater.

neglect. being cheap, whatever. if you knew it was broke and did not repair it or at least take any nessasry steps to mitigate the damage I cant help ya. if you did not care why should yamaha?
I feel bad that you have a problem but that cylinder just did not fail out of the blue, there is a reason for the first failure. there is a lot more to maintaing a motor than just a yearly oil change. if I had a choice I would change the water pump and t-stats every year and the oil every other. it also seems you need to find another dealer. I have had motors 6 months out of warrenty that yamaha paid the parts on.
good luck and keep posting

First off we had no idea of the extent of the damage, the motor ran . It just had no top end.
Intitial guess ( by a mechanic) was electrical. The water contamination was not the original diagnosis, only after the initial repairwas done . There was absoulutely NO water in the oil on the original failure. Like I said likely the oil pump.Yamha has yet to determine what the cause of the original problem was, and further more they cannot tell me how the water is getting into the oil now. Let me stress this motor was in NO WAY neglected or abused . In fact I would say it has less than 70 hours on it and oil was changed at least twice a season

oil pump failure would have shown up as a rod through the block. sleeve bearings will not run very long before they melt. oil pump failure wont blow a piston on a 4 stroke the crank will fail long before the piston overheats. the motor was telling you I am sick. you ignored it. the water is most likely coming from a leaking head gasket. most techs have no experience with 4 stroke rebuilds much less high performance 4 stroke rebuilds.the 4 strokes are a bit different than the 2 strokes on sealing the gaskets. if silicone was used at all it will leak . about the only things that melt pistons are lean conditions and overheat. preignition will eat a hole in the piston crown. the piston will tell the tech why it failed if the tech has the proper training and skills with experience.
its not a yamaha defect its most likely a tech deficiency. I throw away 15 or 20 engines a year that were not running right but the season was over and holidays were coming so they canned it till spring only to find rusty cranks and rods and stuck pistons.
if its sick call a DR

good luck and keep posting
