The sump inside the cowl is leaking oil....i think from the pick up. It is about half way down with a rubber seal around it and a couple of wires coming out. I have taken it loose as best a possible with out dumping the rest of the oil...and tried to make sure it was seated...still leaks.....HELP!!!!

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Wily

I had the same issue with a 1991 Yam 90. My leak was around the black rubber cap on the oil pickup unit as you describe. One fix I used for a while was to place a nylon wire-tie around the cap which worked quite well.

Ultimately I bit the bullet and replaced the oil pickup unit which is the best fix. Cost was about $150.00 I believe for the part. If you go this route, I would remove the oil reservoir and wash it out with soap and water. The wires on the oil pickup run under the front of the engine and are connected into a harness on the starboard side.

Correction its not the oil pickup but rather the oil level sensor for the reservoir.

Wily,
I would not mess with it but take it back to the dealer who should fix it under warranty!

That black cap is just a press fit and I don't think it's a great design - but it's only a problem when the engine is tilted up which in turn tilts the reservoir enough that oil reaches the cap.

My dealer, who is usually pretty knowledgeable said a tie-wrap is the way to go, old or new. Should have been one there to begin with. If you need to take the cap off for any reason, it's easy enough to cut the tie and put in a new one.
