Hi there, i'm hoping someone out there can help. i'm looking at buying a 2003 yamaha 200hp V6 salterwater series second hand that has done 480 hours. the service history isn't all that flash (the previous owner changed the filters himself and thats about it from what i can tell). the compression is good. would the motor have been damaged by its lack of servicing??

MY GOD , WERE TO START. HAVE THE HEADS BEEN RETORQUED. HAS THE IMPELLER BEEN CHANGED. HAS THE DRAW TUBE BEEN REPLACED(O2 SENSOR SERVICED). TPS ADJUSTED. DOES THE OWNER HAVE A LAPTOP AND YAMAHA BOUGHT ONLY PROGRAM TO RUN DIAGNOSTIC. THINK THAT THIS IS A VERY LARGE AMOUNT OF(THE BEST PART OF) THIS ENGINES LIFE. IS THE ENGINE STILL ON WARRANTY, IF SO HOW LONG. SEE DEALER.

I have a 1999 Yamaha Saltwater series II.
I have had the water pumps changed since I have owned it 1 year.
What should be done to this motor to keep it running smoothly?
Do I need to have carbs rebuilt?
What else is mandatory?

Mike

my suggestion would be to have a fuel vacum test done. check to see if your thermostats are working, maby replace them. use only yamalube oil or esso outboard mix oil (same thing). i hope you use a racor filter with a see through base and if so, do you run your kicker off the same racor. if so i suggest you have a one way check ball or a fuel grade shutoff valve installed in kicker hose outlet of the racor so you can't suck air from the kicker to the main engine. hope this helps. water and , or air in the fuel system can cause catastrophic failures.

Jabba,

First find out about the warranty and if at all possible, have a dealer connect a laptop. They can download a good amount of history, actual total hours etc.

This past year I purchased a boat with 95 Yam 175HP V6 with the same type of minimal service history. After checking the compression and test running while on the trailer I decided to take a chance and go with it. After dealing with all of the following maintenance issues, I have a great running motor and am very satisified with the purchase.

Buy a manual and you can do all the work yourself.

1. Dumped and cleaned both 2-stroke reserviors.
2. Replaced small inline oil filter mounted on external tank.
3. Replaced external water seperator/fuel filter and strainer on engine.
4. Replaced high amp wiring cable from engine to battery. Corrosion on wire lug ends, quite common.
5. Replaced both thermostats. Originals were frozen in open position also very common.
6. Replaced poppit valve which is part of cooling system.
6. Installed impeller kit.
7. While doing impeller, replaced the main shaft bushing. I believe used on all 25" shaft models. These wear and cause unexplained engine squeaks and knocks.
8. Changed lower unit oil.
8. Carbs removed soaked and rebuilt to resolve idle problem.
9. Spray decarb treatment followed by spark plug replacement.
10. Lubricate all linkages.

Yours would need the O2 Sensor service as well.
