I am looking purchasing a boat "as is" that sunk. Supposably the motor was not pickled or treated however it turns freely and is not seized up. Is there any suggestions on how to minimize my risks on this motor. Does anyone have any history or experience with the HPDIs that can be helpful. the motor is a 2002.
I appreciate any suggestions.

Hi,
Can You ever trust that engine if you manage to get it started? For example all that electronics that has been in the water... Personally I would not buy it unless very very cheap price.

run run away very fast
the motor is garbage now
there is just so many electricals that will fail and its incredably expensive. the VST pump is over 700 dollars sitting on the counter and that does not include the 90 dollar filter in the medium pressure line nor the 28 dollar VST seal.
so unless all you want is the hull stay away from it. the trim unit and gear case may be ok. but the power head is most likely a junker.but as far as the info goes tell me what you want to know about it.

If you do the resale please tell the buyer all details. You don't want some young family to lose their life over your doings.

From the context of your post I didn't see any information indicating who the seller is.

I would expect a motor of that size and cost were/should have been insured. Therefore if you are dealing with an insurance company or their broker you can conclude if the motor wasn't good enough for them to pay for a rebuild, they know indeed the value of the motor is nill. Perhaps anything they recover goes toward the employee of the month bonus.

I would recommend you shoot from the hip and tell them you are buying it for parts and at the most only the salvagable parts. If you are mechanically capable it may be possible to keep your fingers crossed to find someone with a blown powerhead as a better electronic platform. However, I don't see this being a quick turnaround profit making opportunity for you. Since it is a relatively new motor and most are still covered under warranty, I don't think you will find any blown powerheads in the near future.
