I am on my 4th season with my Yamaha F100 4 stroke and have basically done nothing to my motor except change oil. It runs so well, I am afraid to touch it. Are there any preventive maintenance items I should be performing other than changing oil (crankcase and foot)?

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

G'day Bama, welcome to iboats. I own an 03 FT60 4 stroke and at first I simply followed the owner's manual servicing guide. However since being an iboats member, I've learnt a heck of a lot from the forum maintenance experts such as rodbolt about servicing my great little Yamaha. So now, in addition to the items mentioned in the manual, I pull the cylinder head and block zincs and clean them with every oil change, plus I change the plugs as it's cheap insurance. The experts here will no doubt help you further, I won't get in their way as I'm not a mechanic... but a short answer to your question from a fellow "layman" is: Yes, you need to do more than just change the oils.

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

G'day Kanadakid. I don't own a Triton boat, the name comes from my old "classic" motorcycle which is a mixture of a 1959 featherbed Norton rolling chassis with an eight-valve 686cc Triumph twin engine.

My owner's manual says to check/adjust the valve clearances every 100 hours so that's what I do. It's easy on the FT60 as they're screw and locknut adjusters. Any more mechanical tips for Bama (and probably me!) guys?

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

not really. keep the pressure valve grommet clean and changed, change the water pump kit every 2 years, change the t-stat every pump change. keepthe block and head anodes clean, check the timing belt and tensioner, keepit all greased and sprayed with corrosin blocker of some kind.the whole key to maint is do it before its needed. odd are that motor would go 8 years with no service at all. however when it finally did break it would not be worth fixing.best thing is to carefully follow the guide in the service manual.and keep asking questions

Don't forget to change the timing belt every 5 years or 1000h. It's the same for all Yamaha 4-stroke outboards.

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

hello
a tip on adjusting valves. buy a GO-NO GO feeler gauge kit, the average back yard mechanic does not have the feel required for valve or even point adjusting. the tolerance is usually plus or minus .001". a go no go is cut in steps. leading edge is ground .002" smaller than the trailing edge. removes the guess work. cost about 25 dollars but they are woth it.
like benC says its rather rare to have to adjust the valves but they do need to be checked periodically. I do find them out occasionally.but if its only.001" out of spec, leave it be.

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

Thanks for the tip rodbolt. I've never had to adjust the clearances in 240 hours of operation, however I do like to check them. This little motor seems to be just about bulletproof, which is remarkable because it gets a caning - fairly big boat (700kg) - waterskiing - driven by maniac 17-year-olds... you know the story!

How difficult is it to tension or change the timing belt? Is there a website or other info anybody could point me to? Thanks.

The factory service manual tells you everything you need to know, and has pictures in it also.

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

hello
I am with ya seahorse
A service manual is a must. clymers and selocs are workable but confusing to the novice. they tend to get confused cause the many models covered. a factory manual is written for a trained tech and sometimes does not describe how things work. but without a manual dont try anything. the other thing most novice/bacyard techs cannot do is RTFM. it takes a bit to understand how the factory service manual is laid out and why.

yamaha factory manuals are exactly the opposite to seloc manuals. imagine 2 novels 1 written with pictures and the other written with words.

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

Hey rodblo and seawhore,
Why don't you just answer the question instead of being a wiseacre? If I owned one of these motors, I would have a service manual. I'm trying to decide on a motor and was trying to determine if there were any outrageous service items to come as a surprise with the different manufacturers. In the future, if you can't just answer the question, keep your hole shut.

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

whoooo i be flamed
scary
why dont a catfish swim back under a rock and eat bottom slime a bit more?

I did not see anyplace on this thread where you actually tried to contribute. the procedure for belt tension is so simple I wont even go there. if he had a specific question about the manual I can help. but if you wish to fix your own stuff you have to have a manual and the common sense to figgure it out. you dont aperantly have eithe. so swim on back under your rock and stay away from the stink bait

Re: Yamaha F100 Maintenance

Apparently you read as poorly as you type. Read my question and reply closely. I was concerned with ease and cost of maintenance of different manufacturers. Illiteracy is such a shame.

Rodbolt (or anyone else)

Can you please let me know what you mean by pressure valve grommet clean and changed?

I've got a F100 and am doing timing belt, water pump, tstat ect. What is pressure valve grommet?

Thanks in advance (and sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead.... Saw the no- pm's in the footer).
