After running at 3/4 throttle for about 2 or 3 miles my motor starts missing and I am getting a buzzer.(buzzer is continuous) I didnt hit anything, nothing blocking the water intake, it seems to be pissing fine. After letting it set for about 5-10 minutes the buzzer goes off and it cranks and runs fine. It did this twice yesterday before I put her back on the trailer. It acted like a fuel problem (water, trash, bad gas, etc) but i have never had a buzzer for a fuel problem. Its not oil injected so i know its not that. Will it bust up like that when its trying to overheat? With it pissing fine why would it be overheating? Thermastat? Impeller? Water Pump? All of the above? Im lost. Any ideas?

You would get a buzzer and rpm reduction if the engine is or thinks it is overheating. When was the last time the water pump, thermostat been serviced? I have seen engines "seem" to pump fine and just set the alarm off by a degree or two...

I have just purchased the boat. Who knows when the last time it was serviced. Sounds like I just need to put a new thermostat and water pump on it to be safe. Thermostat is no big deal, how hard is it to replace to water pump. I have descent mechanic skills, should I tackle this one myself?

No prob. just put the motor in gear before you pull it...all bolts and a speedo tube from there...

leave the engine in netural. its easier. dont miss the bolt under the trim tab area. dont forget the speedometer line and its easy. if its a saltwater engine it may require heat on the bolts. dont forget the pressure valve grommet service either.

ok, what did i do wrong. Got the lower unit off (in netural) and replaced everything without a hitch. Put it back on and now its in gear, even when the shifter is in netural. ??????

That happens sometimes when you pull it in netural...the shift shaft has about a tooth of play in netural so if you didn't bump it that would have been fine...that is why I said put it in gear...second reason is you can grab the prop and move the drive shaft if the teeth don't line up...now you have to pull it back off and start over

Yes, just watch your movement on your shaft...

Re: '98 Yammy 90hp buzzer

I do 10 a week and never place them in gear. I find that in gear its more difficult to reassemble. the splines on the yamaha are so fine that only a slight rocking will line them back up to the crank.if all is correct there wont be any rocking of a "tooth" mostly cause its splined not toothed "). the propshft has a groove to retain the clucth locking balls and spring. helps keep it locked in a position of F-N or R. its not like some of the smaller motors that are spring loaded for fwd. but even the poor clymers manual states in capitol letters to place the shifter in neutral. I even suspect in your service manual it tells you how to test the shift and to place the lower unit in neutral for the 85 and up as well as some of the 50 and 60 HP models. so on the 90 HP gearcase if the shift splines move freely it will indicate another problem. should take a bit of pressure to move the lower shift shaft<br />it takes a bit to overcome the detent ball and spring assy in the propshaft bore that is attached to the clutch. but yes you have to drop the case and place it in neutral then go back up with it.

I couldnt stand it....I have the case back off. What now. Turning the shaft is turning the prop. Is the clutch in the lower unit or in the upper case. Sould the shaft be turning the prop. The boat is in neutral, but it was the first time I put it back on. What should I be looking for.

Also, should there be water in the lower unit outside of the water pump casing. When I took it back off it was wet in the lower unit itself?
