Starter vs. ignition problem?

I have a 2000 Yamaha 115hp 2 stroke. When I turn the key to start, it begins to crank and if I let go of the key and it returns to the on position it will continue to crank. Also sometimes when it starts, I can still hear the starter whining for a couple of seconds. Any ideas on this problem? Thanks

Re: Starter vs. ignition problem?

First, troubleshoot it, DMT.

Measure the voltage on the small terminal on the solenoid when you engage the starter. The voltage should stop immediately when you release the key.

Should the voltage remain when the key is released, your problem may be in the ignition/starter switch.

Then measure the voltage on the large terminal on the starter when engaged. If that voltage remains and the voltage on the solenoid has stopped, the solenoid is sticking. Replace it.

Good luck. :)

Re: Starter vs. ignition problem?

Ok, when I was going to start the engine to check solenoid readings I noticed that when I turn the key and start the engine, I can hear what sounds like the starter spinning, but when I put pressure on the key(not actually turning it) like I would be turning it off, the starter sound stops and engine continues to run fine. I am pretty new to outboards, this being my first, so testing the solenoid is kinda confusing. I have a Selco repair manual on order to help a little. Does this sound like I could be looking at the key switch problem? Thanks alot for the help!

Sounds like a key switch problem, DMT.

Re: Starter vs. ignition problem?

Ok JB, or whomever has advice, I am pretty sure it is the ignition switch but I would like to hear some thoughts because I just found out a new switch runs about $90. I have tested the solenoid (volt and ohm tests) shows no volts with key OFF, shows no volts in ON position, shows volts at START. When key is turned all the way back to OFF volts are gone, but if key is just released from START, volts remain.
When engine is started, the starter pinion gear drops from fly wheel but starter continues to spin. Sometimes fiddling with the key will cause the starter to stop. I checked the ignition wires at switch and am getting some abnormal readings(showing circuits between wrong wires).
Thanks again for all the help I appreciate it.
