Re: Nearly new Yamaha 40hp total loss?
southpause
no apologies nessasary
its kinda traumatic when someone like me tells you your motor is just dead. shop around a bit. its very possible to find reman motors and the occasional new powerhead assy's for less than 1500 dollars. takes about 6 hours to install one with rebuilding the carbs.if the crank was damaged its a bit pricy. usually crank damage is due to a lack of lubrication. most likly from water intrusion or it just sat to much with not enough oil on the shiney parts. but a bad diaphram can allow excess fuel in the crankcase area and wash the oil off. at an idle your 40hp,if its oil injected, runs about 200 to 1 on the fuel oil mix and increases to 50-1 above about 3500 RPM. with twenty min or more of idle time before shut down there is just not enough oil left for long term(over 30 days) storage.
I dont like running the fuel out. it still leaves some in the bowl that clogs jets. thats why they have drains. if you need to remove the fuel from the system use the drains. then dump the engine filter and use canned or compressed air to clear the fuel pump and carb fuel lines. the oil injected yamaha 40 hp injects the oil into the reed area down stream of the carbs so there is no oil mixed in the fuel bowls. so yes if your going to store it over 30 days fog it down but I still think 4000 dollars is excessive. if I get a chance ill look up some prices to see if its inline.
