Just purchased 2002 Contender 23 Open w/ the engine above, and pretty much anywhere above 3000 rpm, I have to hold the engine control arm in place or it slowly slips back to a lower rpm. I imagine this is a pretty easy adjustment, but I was hoping for some advice before I start tearing into the control case. Thanks in advance for any help.

can you describe your control box? is it a yamaha box? if so is it side mount or binnicle? is it a 703 or 704 ?

rodbolt -- it is a yamaha control box -- not sure if its a 703 or 704 (and I'm not near the boat for the next week), but it is a binnacle mount.

binnacle will be a 704. remove the 4 screws holding the trim cover, remove the cover. on the lower edge of the box near the mounting surface you will see a round post with a screwdriver slot. tighten that. its the throttle friction.

Make sure your throttle is actually physically moving back in order to apply Rodbolt's solution. If the engine speed is slowly dropping back and the throttle is *not* moving, the problem is more likely a faulty or loose throttle position sensor.

I've had both of these problems (although the control box fix is so easy to try you need to check that out first).
