Suzuki Problem

I have a 2002 140hp 4-stroke Suzuki outboard that continues to lose rpm intermittintly. Sounds like it is fuel starved. I thought it might be water in the fuel or tank, so I installed a filter/separator. No help. It runs good for 10 to 20 seconds then loses 10 to 1200 rpm for 10 or so seconds. Dirty injectors? Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Suzuki Problem

Has a Suzuki dealer/service center tried to diagnose what might be the problem? I'm not sure but probably they can, if they have it, just plug it in to a computer diagnostic software that tests important components in the outboard and give a test report.
Is it out of warranty? If no just have the Suzuki dealer have a look at the problem. If yes, I would probably have a Suzuki dealer have a look at the problem anyway but it will probably cost You some $ unless there is goodwill involved.

An easy test to eliminate fuel delivery problems from Your tank to the fuel connector on the outboard it to run the outboard on a small external gas tank. Try that just to eliminate this on the "suspected items" list.

Re: Suzuki Problem

Our 70dt displayed the same symptoms and was diognosed with a bad coil which was replaced. The marina says it has run fine after the repair, but we won't have a chance to run it until this weekend. I'll follow up with our experience. Our motor was out of warranty and the coil is an expensive part (total for parts and labor about $250)

Re: Suzuki Problem

If it has a Suz tach, the check engine light will flash if you have a sensor problem.Check the fuel pressure, high side 36 lbs. Drain the injector rail and fuel vapor seperator, any trash means the fuel system will need to be cleaned. Water and lack of use kills the fuel system this engine. There is a small trash filter inside of the vapor seperator that when dirty will lower fuel pressure. The trash will sometimes ruin the fuel pump and fuel regulator.

Re: Suzuki Problem

Sorry for the delay reporting our experience. The replaced coil seems to have solved out problem completely. It's like brand new. Again, our symptons were intermitant loss of power, cutting out and upon reduced throttle coming back to running smoothly.
