Electrical Problems...???

I'm still having trouble with my 1986 90hp 2stroke yammie. It will not shut off with the key and the tach isn't working. Could these two be caused by the same problem? Also, the trim/tilt just started acting up, it will only trim down and not up.

I tried grounding out the white wire at the powerpack and it does shut the motor off, what would cause it not to shut off with the key? I'm getting very frustrated with this. I just ordered a new engine harness, do you think the old one might be the cause? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanx
Ikaika

test the ground wire between the engine block and the key switch. the engine kills by taking the white to the black at the keyswitch. the tach circuits also use the same black wire for a ground. sounds to me like someplace between the engine block and the key ya lost a connection.

When you say keyswitch do you mean at the remote box? if not whhere is it located? I just put 2 new 703's in, can it be the engine harness? Forgive my ignorance if nothing makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Ikaika

yes at the control box. check that you have a ground at your control box. could be an open circuit on the ground side, likely in the engine harness if you have 2 new controls.

Thanks BenC

I have a new engine harness on order but I was just informed it is backordered so who knows when I'll get it. How can I check the ground at the control?
I know I'll probably need a volt meter, but what kind of readings do i look for?

Thank you
Ikaika

ohms to begin with. you will need to break open the control box and measure from the black wire to the engine ground.
