I'm thinking about installing a safety cut off switch in my little runabout. Probably the lanyard style.

If you have one on your boat, do you use it?

Where is the most practical place to mount the switch?

Have you ever used it in emergency situations?

Thanks,

Mark.

absolutely on the lanyard.Mount it near the steering wheel or where you will be standing or sitting while operating the boat.It is a simple thing that can save your life!!! and is a decent theft prevention measure.

Probably a choice like seatbelts.

But if you get thrown out of your car,it probably won't circle around an hit you again.

A boat can do it many times as you try to swim away.

DHP

Once it is installed you have to use it for the motor to run.The "do you use it" part is clipping it to your shirt or shorts

Re: Do you have a lanyard safety cut off?

Have it. Don't use it. The only benefit is if there is a risk of being thrown from your seat or out of the boat. The way my boat is setup, both are extremely unlikely. If I had less freeboard and higher speed capability, then I would consider it. Especially important if your seats do not have side bolsters. Pretty easy to end up sitting on the floor . . .

I guess when I stand at the helm the risk is a lot higher . . . hmmmmmmm.

Got it, don't use it in the Pontoon boat. Do in the runabout, though...

Re: Do you have a lanyard safety cut off?

I was in WalMart today and found this lanyard kill switch. For about $10 I figure it is worth trying out. I'm not worried about problems with other people in the boat, but I do launch the boat solo and I'd hate to fall out with no one else in the boat.

I guess the thing to do is play around with finding a convenient location to mount it. Also have to tap into the ignition wires at the control box.

It would also give the added protection against the kiddies starting the motor while others are still in the water. Yikes!

Hmmm. Maybe I should call the insurance company and see if it qualifies for a rate reduction! :D

Re: Do you have a lanyard safety cut off?

i don't have one. i think it's a good idea. especialy when thinkin about dhp's remark....are ya a good swimmer?...or perhaps the question is how gooda swimmer am i? sure would be a bummer to have to try to get away from yer circlin boat tryin to mow ya down everytime......yikes... wish i could find the pic. some dudes got ejected out of a high proformance boat on a river. the pic of the boat was about 100' into the tree line, 20' in the air. there was a high profomance boat perched there in a tree, the driver ejected w/o a lanyard, fortunently into the river. lanyard was clipped to the panel. a tree ripped right down the center of the boat about 10'.... thinkin about that'll make ya get a lanyard... on a side note. i've been on the river where i really wanted my boat started, like right now, to avoid a danger i should have noticed before but didn't. my neutral safty switch almost gave me the blues for pilein up on the rocks on that day. i rembered the safty lock out just in time. a lanyard would just be one more step in that senario......dought it will be high on my list of things to do to my boat. but if i needed something to do on my hip, rebuilt boat like yers mark42, i'd do it. of corse, ya could put one in and like my buddy, ya just clip it to the panel and forget about it. knowing it's there just in case :) ...happy boatin man....

Re: Do you have a lanyard safety cut off?

I have one in the throttle housing. Came with the motor.

Do i use it? Darn right I do. Sides of my bass boat are so low getting thrown out... could definatly happen. While using the kill switch such an event would only result in me being cold and wet, not something potentially tragic.

Re: Do you have a lanyard safety cut off?

My boat came with one, but my motor/controls didn't (96 boat and 79 Merc 140 OB) I did upgrade the controls to the Quicksilver 2000 that has one, but when I asked the guy that installed it, he said that this control is actually for an I/O and they work differently. I am not sure whick is whick, but one cuts power to shut the motor, and the other one adds power to shut the motor. My motor and controls are not compatable for the kill switch.

Craig

Re: Do you have a lanyard safety cut off?

Oh thats that stupid little cap that falls off once in a while. I am thinking of just soldering:crimping:heatshrinking the wire together. :)

Its there but i don't like it. If I were to fall out I think I could be sure the boat will circle around and kill me. However I have never fallen out of a boat and I have done some wild and stupid things. Having said all that if this was a bass boat yes I would use it as there are no sides on them thar things.

Also the boats barely able to get out of its own way with the Force on the back. :D

I use mine when the situation warrants (alone on boat, rough conditions, etc), but I don't see the point in being slave to the thing. As someone said, total avoidance of all boating risks means never going out in a boat.

Yes, I have one and I use it most of the time, always when the kids are in the boat. It's kind of a pain in behind, but it's a good safety feature.

Re: Do you have a lanyard safety cut off?

In my state any boat over 14 ft has to have one and it is like a $125. fine if it don't work. If you have the mag type engine you don't want to just short out the wires , you will not be able to start it.
