How come when you see photos of cars on car forums the lisence plate is always blocked out, but the hull number on boats is never blocked out?

Is there any danger of displaying the registration number on a public forum? And why do people block the license plates on cars anyway?

So nobody can find out who you are, where you live, drive over to your house, and steal your boat or car.
It's not so much hiding that information as it is hiding that information while putting your car/boat in the spotlight.

I don't see where there is much difference from someone hunderds of miles away seeing the numbers in a picture or someone local seeing them when you fillup at the local station. After all our car license number is in plain sight. Fact is if someone wants to steal it they will.

It's odds.
The odds of you driving down the street and picking up an INTERESTED party are slim, but, it does happen.
The odds of you advertising you boat and finding Thousands of INTERESTED parties is quite high.

If I want to buy a boat, I'll not be walking down the street waiting for one to happen by.
Rather, I'll go find the place that has the boat because this place is also looking for me.

Those that don't "buy"....They do the same.

I find it hard to believe that most common theieves shop for a particular item to steal. Usually it targets of opportunity, they don't care what it is as long it's something easy to get and easy to sell.

The kind of people who find what they steal in this manner aren't "common thieves". You're right in that most thieves are looking for an easy mark but there are others who will target something specific. I don't think it's a huge concern, but why make it easier for the few who would do this?
