the boat i got i lost the transferable registration that the guy gave me and he moved so i can't get in touch with him anymore, so
now i need to get the new paper work on this boat, and all i have is a bill of sale, and i'm trying to register it but they want the paper work
can i forget this and tell the dmv i found it abandoned in the water and i towed it to shore? does that old admiral law work with dmv? i was told and actually read too that the admiral law says that if you find an abandoned boat in the open water or adrift ashore you can tow it and claim it and get the paper work.i did some hwk online and the state of connecticut has that but all they want you to do is run an ad in the local paper for three days and you bring the clip to dmv and you're off the hook
please help
the boat is kinda old 1978...

Re: loophole question

I said this once before about a guy trying to register a trailer that was missing the VIN plate...
The "home made" option must be great for boat/trailer theives.

Re: loophole question

I can only say that there pretty strict about the paper trail on everything.

And a lot of times it depends on who is at the counter looking at the papers ( i had some problems with my parents things when they passed on even with all the papers)

It took me 8 weeks to get a new reg on a trailer i owned because i had let expire for to many years :(

Your best bet is to get in line and see what they say :)

tommays

Re: loophole question

How long ago was this? And the seller didn't leave a forwarding address? Duplicate titles can be obtained for any titled vehicle. Yes -- you need to locate the seller but the process can be done (in most states) by mail. So check with your DMV and see what it takes to get a duplicate or replacement title in the former owners name. In some cases this can be done in conjunction with a title transfer so check that as well. Get the paperwork from the DMV and do your part of it. When signatures are required, send the documents to the sellers old address with a letter explaining what happened. A few bucks inside may help expedite the process. The letter will either be returned as undeliverable or it will be forwarded. I undeliverable you'll need to wait a bit and then begin web people searches in an attempt to locate the seller. When that's done and if the guy is upright at all the process should go ok. Titles aren't grocery store receipts -- they need to be transferred quickly and stored carefully. As you found out its a pain the back side to deal with a lost title.

Re: loophole question

thanks guys, i'll try the post office someone told me to see if there is a forward address for this guy because the dmv people are not helpful at all, and the other day i waited in line for over 2 hours to get a number and wait another 45 mins just to find out that i need the original title, or its dublicate, like i didnt know that,
i just thought to find a less frustrating alternative
tthank you
ed

Re: loophole question

hey bondo, you are right nysdmv does not issue titles to boats prior to 1987, so for boats over 14ft and after 1987 you need to have a title. As far as the home made i haven't really found anything concrete yet pertaining to boats, but i do know this that if the boat does not have a motor (sailboat, dinghy, paddle boat or any other boat without a motor) then you are not required to register it with dmv, and if it happens to be prior to 1987 then you don't even need a title for it,
see if you can find some more info
