Hey guys, i followed the advice of the moderators and read every FAQ (posted last month) as well as the guide for the new guys, but there is a request that i have, for the moderators:
Is it possible that you guys can make up a list of some of the terms you use and what they mean because it would help clear a lot of confusion when reading numerous post topics, thus less meaningless new postings being put up.
Ex: what is a woodruff key?
what are muffs (it took me a while to learn thru part search)
what is a VRO and is it only found on 4 stroke or 2 stroke as well?
what is a livewell? cowl? carb?

some other terms such as swingers, beam, transom, gunwhale, etc i think i figured out from cross reading different topics...
thank you in advance

Re: Hopefully JB or other moderators will read it

Hmmmmmm. Interesting post. Seems to call for a dictionary of boat and engine terms that we use here.

Let's start a collection. If we are going to explain them, let's spell them correcly.

A Woodruff key is placed in slots of parts that must stay in exact alignment with each other. A flywheel and a crankshaft, for example. Straight keys are simply straight pieces of mild steel, but a Woodruff key has a partial disk on it that fits into a curved slot so that it cannot slip.

VRO means Variable Ratio Oiling. It was used only on OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) 2 strokes for about 10 years. Other automatic oil injection/mixing schemes were/are used by many makers but are not called VRO.

Stringers are fore/aft beams in the skeleton of a hull.

Gunwale (also called "gunnel") is the top of the side of a hull, where guns were mounted in history.

A livewell is a water filled container inside the boat in which to keep bait/fish alive.

Cowl is one of the names we give the cover that goes over an outboard engine.

A carb is a carburetor, used on engines that don't have fuel injection to provide and mix air and fuel to the engine.

I am not going to compile or alphabetize this dictionary, but here is a start to someone who may want to.

Volunteering, ebaftj01? :)

Maybe there should also be an "Old Wives Tales" section debunking common myths like removing oil injection, and showcasing "Really Bad Ideas" like test running the motor on the ramp before launching. :)

Maybe even a "brief history:" included in the glossary after the definition? Like the VRO. It isn't variable anymore. Only the first version was variable. Those had a bad reputation, maybe deserved (the source of the remove-the-oil-injection myth). But it's successors have proven quite reliable.

This site just keeps on growing. :)

While this is a good idea, take a look at http://www.wikipedia.org/ for some or your questions.

If you are not familiar with this, it is an encyclopedia where the entries are written by users. Very useful.

A search for "woodruff key" got me ...are used to make the seat for woodruff keys. These keys are used to retain pulleys on shafts and are shaped as shown in the image. thanks guys, let's hope it will grow in time
* * *
Carburetor, (aka Carb)is used on engines that don't have fuel injection to provide and mix air and fuel to the engine. Equivalent of today's cars' fuel injection.

Cowl is one of the names we give the cover that goes over an outboard engine.

Gunwale (also called "gunnel") is the top of the side of a hull, where guns were mounted in history.

Livewell is a water filled container inside the boat in which to keep bait/fish alive.

Stringers are beams that run fore/aft in the skeleton of a hull (if you tear the floor board you will see them.

VRO means Variable Ratio Oiling. It was used only on OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) 2 strokes for about 10 years. Other automatic oil injection/mixing schemes were/are used by many makers but are not called VRO.

Woodruff key is placed in slots of parts that must stay in exact alignment with each other. It only takes a few Canadian beers to put you USA boys on your azzes!

Last time down in California I went to see my buddy who used to live up here. We drank like fish and still didn't feel hammered with that dishwater you call beer! :D :p

Ever had a Brador, Bondo? Nector of the Gods, made by Molson, but will put you on your a*se pretty quickly. Unfortunately they don't export it to the states (at least not that I've ever seen). Once on a business trip to Toronto (pre 9/11, obviously) I brought back 2 cases of Brador as my carry on baggage. Got comments from almost everyone I passed on the plane (including pilots & attendants) about my obligation to share them during the flight home, lol.
