Hi folks,
I must say that this forum is great!!! I'm new here and I'm here to stay!!!

I have a question about speakers,
In this big "jungle" of speakers, I found out that they make 7" 2way speakers. What is the purpose of these speakers in comparison to the conventional 6.5" or 6"*9"? Why do they make so many different sizes?
Not a big hotshot when it comes to speakers!!
Thanks

Generally speaking the bigger the speaker the better the base response. I would stick with the standard 6.5 as these are cheap and easily replaced if they get wet.

I agree with everything said above but would add if you have or intend to get a compass for navigation then it is very important to get speakers with out too strong a magnet. The distance from your compass to the speaker is very important. Even 6 inch speakers need to be 4 feet or more away to not affect the compass.

Two way speakers says it is actually two speaker in one. It likely has a big base speaker with a twetter high frequency mounted inside.

Aren't marine speakers shielded to avoid screwing up the compass? I'm gonna be in the market soon and the only place to mount speakers on my boat is in the center console....that has a compass sitting on top of it.

I don't know if all marine speakers are shielded, but the ones I put in did not affect my compass at all. And it's less than 2 feet away directly across from the back of the speaker to the compass....I used the Poly-Planar series, which are designed not to interfere with the compass or autopilot....

web page

2 way speakers have a little tiny tweeter mounted in the center of the driver, essentially combining two speakers in one.

For open-air use, I think it'd be overkill (and might not sound good), go with the 6.5 as Paulie suggested.

:p Naw your just a native webfoot tree huggin liberal............... :D

Any speaker with a poly cone will do nicely, However if you need a special app speaker (magentically sheilded) that is all together a different matter.

You might want to make a trip to you local audio store and find a speaker that will reproduce well with limited enclosure space and a poly cone.

Neither, I live on the southern coast at Lakeside, Tenmile Lakes.

If it were not for Eugene. Salem and Portland, this would be a Republican State. About 95% of the state is conservative, its the high population Counties (3), that kill the rest of the state.

Re: 7" and 8" speakers

About half of the marine speakers have some form of sheilding. My 7 inch marine speakers when finding a place to mount would move the compass anywhere closer than 3 feet. I listened to the ones with aluminum and lots of sheilding but could not find any that sounded good and were sheilded. They all will ok for the VHF but for music need a little wider range. Anyway my point is make sure you check there affect before you cut the holes and mount.
