just bought a '92 130 with my "new" boat.

my family has owned several yamahas and are good friends with a local yamaha tech who has done all out troubleshooting, if not all of our work over the years. he's on vacations so i figured i would ask online for some advice before i put her away for the winter.

heres this--

she hadnt been run in a year or so (had fuel stabilizer), so after buying i dumped her in the lake due to the rough seas on the ocean. the engine starts and runs well, although it could use a tuneup (little rough, but had been sitting for a year). up to about 4,300 rpm she screams, very consistant power and very strong. if i give it more throttle, it will surge at first and i can feel/hear the engine pick up steam, just to hesitate and back down to about 4,300 rpm. i know the engine can run at the higher revs as it will pick up for a second or two before hesitating.

so, i'm planning on tuning it up and having my tech look it over in the spring, but i am just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what to check other than usual tune-up items, as i'm a little restless. are there any specific things to tuneup on these engines other than on our other yamahas? (we have a 40, 150, and two 250's)

Not really, very similsr as to service. It does sound as if you have a fuel restriction and special attention should be given to the fuel pump and carbs.

im no yammy expert by any means, but i am a outboard repair man at heart.

i would definatly take off the carbs and take em apart and severly clean and reclean them, soak them, and re-assemble with new rebuild kits.

also inspect your fuel pump. if you have the cash, get a new diaphram kit.( if its got one)

also, try decarbing the motor with sea foam or yammy power tune.

Yammys are known to have carbs clog if they sit up to lon especially with fuel in them. When you put it away for the winter you might want to talk to your mechanic about running all the fuel out of the carbs. Just my 2 cents

Re: yamaha 130 problem--

those fuel pumps dont last forever and if the diaphram breaks on an oil injected motor it can trash the motor. its not a matter of if you have the cash its a matter of pay 40 for a pump or find another motor. stabilizer is good for 6 months and then only if added to fresh gas. adding more gas or more stabil to trash gas just adds more trash gas.
at a year old dispose of the gas. clean the carbs repair or replace the fuel pump and keep rolling.
the design of the oil injected yamaha v4 is very tolerant of lean running but it wont do it forever.
but the standard cooling system and fuel system maint is about the same for all the V yamahas, depending on the model there may be some extra stuff.
its not a matter of octane, its amazing how tolerant the V4 yam is to poor octane fuels. its a matter of the varnish the poor burning fuel leaves on the piston skirts and rings. there is only so much clearence between the piston and the wall. once the black sticky deposit fills that clearence the piston fails shortly thereafter.

Re: yamaha 130 problem--

alright, i met up with my yamaha tech this weekend while running the boat after adding some fresh fuel. seems to agree, something fuel related. otherwise says it idles well and it does produce very good power. i also noticed it started gradually getting higher revs the longer i ran it.

will be changing filters this weekend and take it for one more run before putting her away. i've never wrenched on these engines, but im contemplating taking off the carbs for the winter and giving them a rebuild. i've rebuilt several bmw engines over the years and have worked on tugs so i know wrenching-- any tricks to dealing with the linkages and keeping them calibrated?

do you reccomend a whole new pump of diaphram, i dont mind doing either, money isnt an issue, but i always like fixing things rather than repairing-- if this is an option

the pump is not much more than the parts to fix it. thats why i donmt bother with them anymore and just replace them. but the are usually easy to reassemble if you wish. the carbs are simple as well. but you will see how small the idle fuel jets are. I usually try not to remove them as they are easily damaged.
