How much above the fuel pump of my 115hp Yamaha can I place the filter? I need to relocate the one I have now. It is too difficult to service. I would like to get it out of the bilge and place it in the motor well.

Not an expert, but I don't think the fuel pump cares where the filter is. I would keep it away from water if possable. I can get a zip-lock bag over mine which ends the mess in the bilge.

Re: location of water separator/fuel filter

thanks JRJ for the reply ,it is not all that simple ,I have to lay on the floor and reach under the splash well to remove the filter ,I only have one hand to use and at times things get a bit troublesome. If I can relocate the sep/fil to a new location such as in the splash well access is greatly improved and I no longer have to get into contortions like a monkey making love to a football. If the filter can be higher than the engine fuel pump things will be better.

flounderman-
I too also though I read that the fuel/water separator has to be at the same height or lower than the fuel pump. I think it came with the Racor installation intructions. It would be nice if it could be mounted higher. Anyone?

My fuel/water separator is about 1' below my bulb. At least 1.5' above the water pump (if the pump is in the tank). It's actually right below my splash well where it cannot get wet.

Re: location of water separator/fuel filter

Shep, we are talking outboards, the water pump has nothing to do with it. Outboards have a feal pump on the engine.
My filter is also in the bilge and I have thought about changing it because I have to go through the same thing and have to use the short filter, no room under it. If I were to change,I definately would go to a Racor. I have seen lots of filters installed in the engine well and they seem to work ok. I would not put it any higher than I had to though. In my case I could not get it that high. I have really good fuel flow on my boat and I often just plug in a hose w/female connection on a hose and siphon gas out of the boat for lawnmowers, etc. Takes about 15 minutes for 5 gallons.

Re: location of water separator/fuel filter

Gary, I may have had my problem solved for me. I called Yamaha in Georgia [they have a hot line] the young man got out the install directions on their filter, he read to me " do not locate in sunlight" okay, then I asked where to place the primer bulb, I wanted to locate it down stream of the filter he said "NO" locate it between the motor and the filter. Not what I wanted to hear, I wanted to prime the filter with the bulb and not have to fill the filter first,I guess I will have to re-invent the wheel. Jerry

Partially fill the filter before installing it and you shouldn't have to worry about it until the next time it's replaced. Even if filled by squeezing, the filter doesn't empty between uses so it only has to be done once at each change. If you put the unit in the splashwell, bite the bullet for stainless even if it's not the vaunted Racor.

flounderman, the reason for not putting it in the sunlight is a heat factor on the cannister building up pressure from the heat. Fortunately here in the PacificNW, we don't have to worry about that angle.
The primer bulb will suck gas into the filter if it is working correctly, just takes a lot of pumping.

Re: location of water separator/fuel filter

good morning all, - - -I am going to put the filter back under the splash well near the bilge but I will make better access to change it out. The primer bulb will go up against the engine as per Yamaha. If I have to pre-fill the canister then so-be-it. A friend asked me one day if I bought the boat to work on or use - - I pondered his question - - looked him in the eye - -and said - - work on. Thanks for all your help guys.
