2004 Yammie F115TXRC
OK...Where to begin?
Out boating w/ the missus yesterday, started out fine, smooth start, everything normal. Ran up the river for about 45 minutes@4000 RPM, saw something interesting, went to throttle back to stop and look and the motor dies. I try to restart, the motor turns over fine but won't catch. After about five minutes, she finally starts again. I decide we're far enough from home and turn around. Coming back down the river, she sounds ok at all power bands, but at WOT she's missing sporadically. OK, it's 9:45am and we're not ready to go home. We stop at an island near the launch to hang out for awhile and I go to turn her off, now she won't STOP running! I open the cowling and disconnect a relay, she dies out. I reconnect. We have friends w/ a boat there and decide we can always tow her to the nearby ramp, so we hang out. After a few hours of hanging out, she starts fine and stops fine when I turn off the key, I do this a couple of times to make sure. We head back to the ramp to load up, as I'm coming in she dies at low throttle. Ten minutes later, I finally get her started again. Thankfully I get her on the trailer.
Is this a heat related problem? ECM? Pulser Coil? Any help will be appreciated.

Re: ECM Problem?

that I have seen before and the cure was an ECM and a main relay. the main relay is located under the plastic cover on the front stbd side. next time its acting up tap the relay with a screwdriver handle. also while its acting up rap the ECU with your knuckles.
so far I have had 2 failures like that, a failure to shut off and a misssfire with it.
last one I replaced the relay and 2 days later I had to replace the ECU.
but it will require careful testing andchecking of the wire harness before condeming the ECU.

Re: ECM Problem?

Is there any visual inspection of the ECM that could tell the tale? Not long ago I had to replace the rec/reg (battery not charging)--I could see a burned up diode on the rec/reg. Do you think the ECM would show a similar symptom?

Re: ECM Problem?

nope
but next time it wont shut off tap the main relay with a screwdriver handle with the key off. if it shuts down the relay is bad, the ECM may be damaged by a bad relay as the relay and ECU work together for the engine shut down sequence.
if its missing at running speeds rap the ECU with your knuckles and see what happens, usually it will shut down so be careful. sometimes it will clear up and run till the next knuckle rap. funny thing it wont show up on the laptop.
