Any one know if the Pilot water streem is supposed to start when the motor starts and run full whenever the motor is running?

Mine does not come on when the engine starts. In fact when I started the other day after the winterization it would not come on until I reved to about 1500RPM.

Motor was purchased with the boat last June.

I cannot find out if it is supposed to flow immediately or not. Dealer says there is a thermostat and the motor needs to heat up first. Owners manual says it needs to flow "at all times".

Any advise would be appreciated.

Re: Rodbolt or anyone that can help

WillyBWright writes on another post;
The only reason to drill holes into an outboard thermostat is to allow a small amount to get thru to make the pee indicator work. Some motors only pee when the thermostat opens. So it's hard to know if the motor is pumping water until the motor warms up. Drilling one small hole into the thermostat allows at least a tiny trickle. That's the only modification to a thermostat I'd suggest.

Is this something I need to do?

Re: Rodbolt or anyone that can help

Well, I'm new to this so bare with me.

I have inspected the grill plates where the Flushing muffs attach (There clear)

I removed the cowling and removed the rubber hose that connects to the pilot hole and to some type of manafold on the engine. (The hose is clear).

I have not removed the grill plates and inspected the entry port.

I called Yamaha today and they say it should pee IMMEDIATELY there is no thermostat/water temprature requirement.

What's next????

PS thank you for answering my post.

Re: Rodbolt or anyone that can help

no worries, it should get a good tell tale in 10 seconds or so. it may not on the fluser mounted on the engine.
your T-stat is vented from the factory and requires no mods.
the manifold thingy is a fuel cooler I believe and they can clog, are you having overheat issues or just a lack of a tell tale?

No overheat but I have not run in a lake yet this year. Just started up last weekend and noticed the tell tale was not running until I reved.

Should I wait to get in the water? Should I clean the fuel cooler some how? Will flushing through the garden hose connection help at all?

I really appreciate your assistance

Gary

Re: Rodbolt or anyone that can help

try backing it overboard, if the pump is run dry, even 30 seconds, damage will start.
trace the tell tale back to its water sorce on the exhaust cover, I think, memory is not so good :) and see if you can blow through it.
could also be the pressure control valve is stuck.

Ok I'll try.

The Yamaha Service Manual does not have a Cooling Water disgram. How do I go beyond the fuel cooler?

What do you mean by "backing it overboard"?

Is everyone as stupid as me?
At least I'm learning!

My experiance has been that often the telltale will not show on muffs but will show with backpressure from running it in a barrel. I was given info on this forum that muffs are not a good way to judge your telltale/water pump. Good Luck.

Re: Rodbolt or anyone that can help

Thanks w2much.

Today I put the muffs on and nothing until 1500 RPM.

But after about 3 min it ran at idle.

Guess I'll just wait till next week when I put it in the lake and see.

rodbolt - when I ran the water through the hose connection with the engine off the telltale ran fine. Does that mean anything?

Re: Rodbolt or anyone that can help

Hey, sounds like you need a new impeller. As stated by rodbolt, just a few seconds run dry ruins the impeller(rubber rubbing steel tends to melt) and this is probably what happened since only a year old. I would pull the lower unit and open up the pump housing and inspect the housing and plate(these are the steel) for grooves just to make sure, but just go ahead and buy an impeller, it's cheap enough.

Re: Rodbolt or anyone that can help

could be your pressure control valve is leaking or stuck open.
if it is you will get the symptoms you describe, could be the impeller got run dry and has melted the housing.
and some 4 strokes just do that.
the F200 and F225 scare the heck out of me on the flusher. low pressure and no volume.
most the big 4 strokes have no where near the same pressure as the V 2 strokes for some reason.

GUESS WHAT
I put it in the lake and LO-AND-BEHOLD It Pissed almost immediately at IDLE !

It was the lack of pressure the Mufs had.

Thanks to everyone especially rodbolt. I learned a lot.

Gary
