Gents,

I'm trying to determine what wires could be shorting and blowing the 20 A fuse in my 2003 F90.

When it blows, the engine won't do anything. Turn over, click, nothing. The trim /tilt won't go one either.

It is the weekend and wanted to try and determine what wires I should re-run or look for a short in.

Thanks for the help,

Kid

disconnect the main plug and jump the starter solenoid brown wire to power to start the engine. this will narrow it down to motor or boat.

ok
I looked a bit at that today.
the 20 amp fuse supplies the main relay. the key on yellow activates the relay and the ECU controls deactivation at shutdown.
almost any red/y wire that is chafed under the hood can do it.
can ya redescribe the problem and tell me the exact location of the fuse again ?

Re: Engine Fuse / 20 A blowing

Thanks for looking this up as knowing what wires might be the culprit may be my only chance at a fix. 70 % of the wires are inaccessible because they are under the back deck.

The engine will run for a while and then sometimes after shut down it won't turn back on and the tilt trim motor won't work.

I did disconnect all the accessories from the battery and it still blew a fuse so that (I think tells me that it eliminates some of those wires that are shorting.

Sometime the engine will start running rough and them when I shut down it won't turn over again unless I replace the fuse.

On a couple of occasions the 20 A fuse blew as soon as I put it in.

On the upper side of the engine the is a black plastic clip in the clip is a fuse holder. If you remove the fuse-holder cap the is 2 fuses in the - top is a 20 A mini fuse and the bottom is a 30 a mini fuse.

The 30 has never blown.

2003 F 90

Re: Engine Fuse / 20 A blowing

your motor is carbed so it should not have a main relay. the 30 amp is for the start circuit I believe.
if the fues blew when you installed it then we need to look at circuits downstream of the fuse that have 12V when the key is off.
any red wire will have 12V with the key off, this includes the red wire to the key switch, the yellow wire or any red/y wires will only have 12V when the key is on.
power for the trim switch comes from the fuse to the key switch then to the trim switch, look carefully for any chafed red wires if it will blow a fuse with the key off.
its also possible the keyswitch is shorting to the black wire internally. the guages are supposed to be fuse seperatly but as I did not rig it I dont know.
nothing attached to the battery should affect that fuse unless an engine red or yellow wire was connected through an instrument wire to the negative battery terminal.
remember electricity acts just like water in a pipe. if you spring a leak it flows to much and a fuse blows.
but ill work a bit harder to find an 03 diagram.

Re: Engine Fuse / 20 A blowing

Yes ,but its terrible as it is an aftermarket manual (clymers) and don't reccomend. They don't even show where the fuses are.

I found the short. It seems on the bottom of the throttle control are some wires that run up to the trim button.

Either the manufacturer (Triton) or my Dealer (Halls marine) cut the whole in the aluminum and
did a rough cut for the wires. They left it very sharp and exposed aluminum which after a couple years wore away the outer sheathing.

Thus the short.

I have taped the wires, put a protective grommet
around the hole......which fixed and should prevent from happening again.

Upon seeing how this was rigged, was very dissaponting. Zero quality or care was taken. Wonder what else I'll have to deal with down the road ?

Thank you for the help.

Re: Engine Fuse / 20 A blowing

wish i could say yours was an isolated incident,at least 80% of the claims i do involve poor/shoddy rigging.
glad ya found it, the aid was when it blew with the key off, limits the 12v circuits
