Howdy Chris.

Welcome to iboats. :)

First you need to find out if it is running on all cylinders. My guess is not. Outboards will seem to run fine on one or two cylinders without a load.

With the engine at idle on the muffs disable each spark plug, in turn. If the rpm drops that cylinder is making power. If there is no change in rpm that cylinder is not making power.

Dead side by side cylinders are probably fed by a bad carb. Other combinations are more likely to be ignition related.

Let us know what you find and we can go from there.

Good luck. :)

can ya get a bit closer on the year?
the 140 was a 4 carb 4cyl inline motor and over the years has used various ign advance setups as well as idle speed controls.

Thanks, rodbolt. I assumed (with all the risk that entails :) ) a V4 with 2 twin throat carbs.
