Have 90 hp 1990 Yamaha and want to start motor off boat. Is there wires that have to be jumped? Anyone know how to do without the controls from console. Thanks

Re: starting outboard on stand

I can get you started, but I can't get you stopped. You need to ground the kill wire to do that. I don't know which one that is and it packs a whallop. Somebody else will be along to help with that.

Remove the prop for safety. Make sure it's in Neutral and have control of the throttle. Touch the brown wire on the starter relay to the positive battery post on that relay.

Like I said, it'll get you going but you still have to be able to stop it. You may be able to choke it to death, but I wouldn't rely on that. You can disconnect the fuel line, but it'll take minutes to use the gas.

Finally, that motor is going to jump around. Make sure it's bolted to the stand, C-clamps will fall off. Make sure the stand has a firm and stable footing.
