HI all, I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem as i am having, here goes,

The engine i have got has been re-built by Docklands boat yard in Portsmouth about 18mths ago, after this it was run but then left to stand for 12-18mths before i bought it. having seen that it was re-built i thought it would not need a service and all should be well. how wrong was i.

The engine start first turn of the key and ticks over perfectly well, i can put it into gear fine and it will go like the clappers. however, after just 100-200 yards the engine will just cut out and die. i put it into neutral and it will (sometimes) start back up but sometimes it wont. after a short while the engine will start and tickover fine as though nothing was wrong however, when i put it into gear it will either cut out straight away or will only let me get small rev's.

I moored up to a jetty after having a scary engine failure in the middle of Conwy esturary in pretty rough conditions, i took off the fuel filter on the side of the engine and cleaned it out. this would have taken me about 30 mins which give the engine time to cool down, once i done this the engine seemed ok, so i went out and give it another go, it done exactly the same again.

I have felt the tell tale for over heating and it was cool water, however, i whilst it was on tick over i felt the cylinders, number 1 seemed to be slightly hotter than number 2+3. could this be my problem?

I have been told that this engine has got a sensor on the head that will cut the engine if it gets too hot, i dont feel that the engine is getting too hot but i am not a mechanic and this might not be the problem.

Any advise would be greatly accepted as i cant use my boat until i get it sorted out.

Kind regards

Paul Murray
