Yamaha digital tach install question

I recently bought a boat with twin F115's and had them install a set of digital tachs. The tach and trim indicators function normally but I see no indication of water or oil. I didn't get anything like an operators manual and have poked around the web a bit looking but with no luck. <br /><br />I'm don't know what the set and mode switches are for other than I can see the hrs indication appear/disappear. Is there a sequence that "turns on" the oil indicator? Water? I do see that a single bar appears above both water/oil when I power system up. I also see that only one of the two gauges has the red power lead connected?<br /><br />Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Yamaha digital tach install question

I apologize for stepping on your thread, but I have the same question. My new boat came with digital instrumentation, (Yamaha F250) and the tach does not indicate temp. or oil presure, just the two symbols at the bottom of the gauge. Nothing in the manuals to indicate if you can use the mode or set buttons for the oil and water. My 10 hr. check is next week, I'll speak to the mechanic and follow-up with you.

Re: Yamaha digital tach install question

Thanks Art, I was told the mode button changes from trip hrs to total hrs, but I don't see any total hrs. When I select mode it is either 0 hrs or blank. I'm told the set is for resetting trip hours..?

I did get a audible warning from port gauge and a bar flased above water temp, but the engine was running on the muffs wiht plenty of water coming from pee hole...I shut it down and restarted, with no repeat. I can't see that it got hot so I wondering if this install was botched...? I'm wondering if the oil level indicator is only used for 2 strokes with oil tanks???? anyone? Maybe only an audible warning for low oil on the four strokes?

I've order the tech manual with rigging info so I'll research when that arrives.

Re: Yamaha digital tach install question

pbburke -
I presume you have the standard digital gauges and not the Command Link.

In looking at http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboar...tail/5/256/1093/8865/all/2/3808/0/detail.aspx
I see that the oil level is similar to the older version of their digital gauge and that is for a 2 stroke. If I am wrong, there will need to be a "sender" on the oil reservoir.

In terms of water - there is only a overheat/oil warning (with buzzer). There is a seperate gauge for water pressure or water temp.

I would ask your dealer's rigger to explain to you the rigging of the gauges to the harness and why there is a spare wire. It is likely not needed. My '87 90 hp 2 stroke and my 2003 F115 4s both have loose wires not connected.

Owners and shop/repair manuals do not include anything on gauges. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

If you both bought new boats recently, you should talk to the dealers rigger. He/She knows everything and can tell you. Sales people don't know and will make stuff up.

Hope this helps.

Re: Yamaha digital tach install question

Ern
repost on a new thread.
as far as the digital tach, not command link, there is NO function for oil pressure or oil level on the F motors nor water temp.
the audble tone is the same tone for low oil pressure, overheat, low battery, water detect, start engaged with the stop lanyard out, engine stall if it twins.
a flasing bar will indicate which alarm just got triggered.
the mode and set switches simply allow either trip hours, total hours or no hours displayed. holding the set and mode while trip hours are displayed will reset trip hours.
total hours are not resetable.
its not uncommon to have unused wires,
never saw a read lead on the 6y5 tachs, sure your not looking at the speedo?
on the tach blacks are ground, yellow is key on power and blue is tach light.
green is tach send.
on a two stroke the oil level sensor monitors tank level, either in the engine mounted tank for inline engines or the remote tank on V 2 strokes.
if the level in the tank drops below a safe level the center bar flashes.
if the level drops to a critical level, less than 20 min of oil remaining the far left bar flashes and the audible sounds.
the dip switch settings on the back simply select 6 or 12 pole altenator,2 or 3 wire trim sender and 2 or 4 stroke engine.
if set incorrectly the indicators will blink all the time for oil and overheat, the trim bars wont work or the tach will read 1/2 or double.
out of the box they are preset to 12 pole,2 wire and 4 stroke but always check them before installation.
the odds of the rigger knowing whats up is 50/50 :)
Ern start a new post and let me think a bit. there is an alphabet soup of tachs and some will require an adapter to adapt your engine to the late style tach.
if you have a dealer nearby look at the 07 rigging guide and the 07 marine technical guide.
