Re: Briggs and Stratton outboard

Since the people here asked for information on the motor, and lots of people added their speculation, I was very happy when Suzuki40 added the specs on the motor. So what if it was off a sales flyer, it was the motor specs. I dont recall seeing him trying to sell one of them.

Please put the post back the way it was.

Nathan, it's one thing to post the specs from a flyer, but that appeared to be the entire thing (including selling points), not just the specs. I suppose moderator could have just edited it down to just the specs (with an "edited" note).

Re: Briggs and Stratton outboard

they sell on ebay in the mid 600's, sometimes high five hundreds. but YOU pay the shipping, I would just as soon get one from BS themselves ... unless, and here is the catch, you find one LOCAL enough to go pick up yourself

thats what I have been doing with my motors

back to briggs .... now if they would only be brave and make a 9.9 with a stainless steel water pump ... no rubber, all steel, gotta be a way! (cars use steel impellers, jsut a thought!)

Ray,

It would be difficult and costly to make a SS self priming pump. Auto water pumps are not self priming.

Re: Briggs and Stratton outboard

did you tighten the clamps tight? I didnt tighten one side once and the motor swung up on me, lol, never mix boating and weeding ... er, the garden, the hoe distracted me .... :p

sounds like some brave soul needs to market an adjustable pitch prop for the little guy, that way it can run at a decent RPM and still be slow enough for trolling

they used to make them for outboards, way way back in the day

sure do want to know what made that motor fall off its leg

Re: Briggs and Stratton outboard

well, if you think about it, mount the pump down low so its immersed in water, car pumps are immersed, and as soon as you surround em with water they start pumping ... eh, maybe im thinking of it wrong, is it cause the auto system is closed and the outboard system is open?

Ray, isn't that what they already do with all the water cooled outboards, immerse the impeller? So what if one's closed and the other's open? They both work the same way.

Re: Briggs and Stratton outboard

we might as well get ready for most o/bs to be air cooled EPA will back them /mfg. with tax brakes . and it is a fact that they put less oil/gas in the water. unless they blow and then well we all know what happens :(

I personally think that the fact that Harbor Freight carries them speaks boatloads for it's quality.... Harbor freight (which happens to have a retail spot 5 minutes from my house) is notorious for carrying cr@p tools. Sure, there are some things that you can get by decently with... But their stuff isn't top quality... (Read between the lines as second-rate or factory seconds type stuff)

Just my opinion... your mileage may vary.

Rex S.

Re: Briggs and Stratton outboard

I just bought one tonight. They have both the black and camoflauge versions, and unfortunately I didn't check the box at BPS so mine is the camo. No big deal, it actually looks kinda cool with all the 'Realtree' type print on it.

I'll take it out tomorrow and report back how it does. One interesting thing, there are warnings ALL OVER the thing saying not to lay it down horizontally other than with the prop facing up. "Carrying/storing in ANY other position WILL result in engine damage caused by oil leakage".

Re: Briggs and Stratton outboard

Not at BPS. Black or camo is $699. Anyway, I took it for a 12 mile spin today. Hey, this thing actually works really well! A friend and I were in a 14' Lowe jonboat, and top speed was around 11-12mph. The very initial startup took some time, but once started it never failed to catch. It idles fine, shifts good and really isn't that bad in the noise department. It's just like any other 5hp lawnmower engine.

One thing that amazed me is how thrifty it is. We had it running pretty much solid for about 2 hours, and it used less than a gallon. Maybe I'm just used to my V8 runabout, but man!

Re: Briggs and Stratton outboard

Just some more information. This is my third trip with the B&S, this time by myself and a 3-man jonboat plus fishing gear. I bought a Minn Kota extension handle (highly recommended since it dampens the vibes), and positioning myself as far forward as I could I saw 14.5mph GPS. The boat was even on plane!

I went to fill the included 3 gallon tank before the trip, and suprisingly it only took 1 gallon after running the motor for about 25 miles the first two trips. I still can't get over how thrifty it is. Even more amazing is the fact it doesn't put out the usual visible crap in the air, or shove oil/gas in the water. Nice and clean. Shoot, I'd take this motor over any 2-cycle 5hp marine motor any day.

SLOOPY,

Did you get it fixed? I was looking at this waterlawnmower and looks ok. I thought the 56 lbs was on the heavy side since my 4 hp weighs in around 40 lbs.
