I have a 1961 Cruiser Inc. wooden boat with a 45 horsepower McCulloch outboard motor. I need to know the oil to gas ratio and how to find out the year of the motor.

How do I find the model number? The serial number is 64304530-1272 if that helps.

Alpo your model number is 64304530.
I dont have the year in print but following number sequence it should be a 64. Fuel ratio is 40:1. 3oz. per us gallon. And for some reason 19 oz.per 6 gallons.
I have an old set of manuals and service aids.
One refers to the 40 hp.(the 61 version of your motor)Concerns about burned pistons.and a number of reccomendations.
1.cooler plugs J4J (J4C)gaped at .035.
2 1961 Quote"gasolines used with Scott engines
must have a minimum rating of 90 octane.
3.Timing changed maximum spark advance from 34degrees btc to 31degrees btc.points set at
.020.
4.Prop.selection: Should be propped for 5,000 rpm full throttle normal load.If load often varies
Should be propped for 5,200rpm one person load.
5.Be aware of lean burn conditions, carb adjusted too lean weak fuel pump, kinked or restricted fuel
lines.
Many of these things were probably allready done on your 64 motor but it pays to be aware of any
errors made over the years.
If your plugs are cooler than J4C leave it there.
Hope I havent scared you.
