Re: impeller/sears 5hp outboard motor

I have a mid 80's Sears Gamefisher 5HP p/n 217.586613--not exact but may be similar. Mine is air-cooled and has no water pump impeller--only the exhaust is cooled by the water. Check your cylinder and head for cooling fins--if present, motor is air-cooled. My motor was made by Tecumseh--once again, yours may be similar. I also looked in my local library and found an old manual that covers a variety of small outboards--worth a try. Good luck and email me if I can help.

Not an expert on these motors but there may be a pump to cool the exhaust.
I believe Clintons used such a pump.
Various parts, manuals etc appear on ebay
occasionally.
Laings may be able to help at:www.laingsoutboards.com

Even if the motor is air-cooled, if it has water-cooled exhaust don't try running it without the water pump. I had a 7.5hp Clinton that I tried this on when the impeller failed. The lower leg heated up and the engine fried and seized. A local boat mech said the pump was made by Eska. I still have the pump housing - it's tall and skinny instead of flat like most pumps. I don't know about the Gamefisher. Best of luck.

For everyone with one of those Eska-based 217.nnnnnn Sears outboards, go to certifiedpartscorp.com. They have parts for all of them, from impellers to carb kits and more. You'll need to call them on the phone number at their site, with your model number in hand.

They're fast to ship, but a bit pricey. Still...they have the parts, and you won't have to hunt for them.
