I was given a Sears Gamefisher 1.75hp for my canoe. I have no history on this motor. It will not start. I bought a new carb, new plug set to correct gap, still won't start. I think the timing is okay, it seems to spark when piston is at T.D.C.I notice it has a transistor ignition module between the shut-off switch and what I assume is the magneto. What does this module do and how can I troubleshoot this problem? Also who made this and what year?. Model # 298-586180 S.N. E 106053.

Re: Sears Gamefisher 1.75hp won't start

Howdy.

The first thing I would suggest is to find out what is missing: fuel/air, compression or spark.

Built in fuel tank, right? If you disconnect the fuel line from the carb and open the valve, does fuel mix come out? Is the vent on the top of the tank cap open?

If you remove the spark plug and spin the engine over does it blow your finger out of the plug hole?

If you reconnect, but don't install, the spark plug and hold it against the head and spin the engine, does it make a hot, blue spark?

If it passes all of those, squirt a bit of fuel mix into the carb before you try to start her. If she tries to fire up you have a carb problem. Since it is a new carb it would be adjustments.

Does the cylinder have fins on it? If so it is air cooled and shouldn't use outboard oil in the mix. Use chainsaw oil.

Let us know what you find. :)

Re: Sears Gamefisher 1.75hp won't start

I seem to remember the spark looked to me just "white". Did not take much notice of color, just that it sparked. I bought the correct plug and set the gap at .025. I purchased a manual from Sears for it.I can see that the piston moves when I pull starter rope. My manual says to use 2 cycle oil. One post here said I should use Chainsaw oil? I have checked and cleaned the fuel valve. Also, there is fuel in the float bowl.

Point well taken on etiqette. It won't happen again. Seems to have good compression, fuel in carb float, vent cap in tank is open, right plug/gap. This is the first 2 cycle, lawn mower, or small engine I can't seem to start? Maybe the "gods" are trying to tell me somethin'. Like I shoulda stayed in TX!

Do the spray bottle trick. Put some mixed fuel in a clean spray bottle, and spray a good dose of gas right into the throat of the carb. If it sputters,it's a carb problem, as JB stated.

The trick does werk.
