Took the project to the lake this evening to check out my handy-work. Got the carb tuned so she idled OK, then took her off the trailer and out into the lake. A pleasant surprise was that I got the balance right after redoing the floor and adding a large casting deck. The only problem was that the engine wouldn’t come up to full revs. It sounded like she was only turning about 3500 RPM. Yes I looked down the throat of the carb and the butterfly was wide open. The motor sounded like it was under a heavy load and didn’t sound right. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve been around two-strokes a lot, but the motor wouldn’t “sing” the way it should at full RPM’s when everything is in tune. Anybody got any suggestions? TIA

Re: Maiden voyage

Let's see -- two-stroke with a carburetor on what might be a bass boat. Sounds like a big old outboard of some kind....

Might be the high speed setting is too rich.

How heavy is your boat? I assume this is the 45hp SeaKing outboard you are referring to. If everything is working well, you may need to re-prop for your load. After you get a tach, of course. :)

LOL, great signature fouled ... re prop that bad boy, but only after you have checked to make sure the motor is lined up, cav plate level with bottom, shift weight distribution around, etc etc

Re: Maiden voyage

Thanks everybody.

I put a new set of plugs in, played around with the motor position (second hole from transom works best), cav plate is about two inches below bottom, weight distribution is OK, guess I need to re-prop, that is if I can find one.
