Finally got to test the new-to-me 14 ft jon boat and '97 Gamefisher 9.9 I bought the other week for $600. the motor runs great with the warm up button pulled out; it goes wide open with no problems and the boat planes out nicely. a lot faster boat than I expected. When I push the warm up button in after running for a while, the boat won't go much faster than a fast idle. when I open the throttle up, it starts to sputter and quit. Is this caused by the motor sitting and not being used much? will it clear by getting out and running the boat for a few weekends? The motor runs great, if a little rich, with the warm up pulled out.

Bowfin

Most likely you need to rebuild the carb and check the fuel system from tank to carb with special attention to cleaning. The carb rebuild
will probably solve the problem but you need to be sure the fuel system is clean and working prtoperly or it may cintinue to foul the carb.

Would the warm up button (choke) bypass any clogged jets? The motor runs out pretty well with the button pulled, it just won't do much more than an idle with the button pushed in.

Bowfin

Bowfin,

You are just masking a problem by running it with the warm op pulled out.

It is starving for fuel.

Most likely a thorough carb. cleaning (rebuild) is in order.

You may get lucky by running some Sea Foam through the fuel. NAPA carries it.

Well, that's twice the advice, so it must what i need to do. i was hoping no to have to disassemble the carbs. Is it difficult? With my motorcycles I would run full strength carb cleaner into the carb, let is sit for a day, then drain the float bowls. But my bikes all had gravity feed carbs. i have never disassembled a carb before. Is it difficult? Do I need a rebuild kit or do i just take it apart and clean the jets. What exactly does the warm up button do (how does it function)? I'm curious as to why the boat runs with it pulled, but not with it in.

Thanks for the help,
Bowfin

Bowfin,

I'm not really familiar with that engine. However, I would venture to say that your "warm up" is nothing more than a ckoke.

I would get a manual. They are about $30.00. I believe a Force manual of the same year would be the same.

I would be willing to bet that you can pick up a carb. kit at NAPA. If you can fix a motorcycle, this will be a piece of cake.

Look here for a manual.

http://www.iboats.com/boatproducts/mallsearch/force_manual/

pulled the carb this weekend and you wouldn't believe the amount of solidified sludge in there. It had built a bridge betweeen the float bowl and jets. cleaned out the main jet with a pipe cleaned. tried to remove the main and needle jets, but they wouldn't budge, so i buttoned it back up and took it for a spin. First it cut off by the boat landing- DOH! forgot to attach the fuel line to the motor. Got away from the landing and it would sputter at full throttle and would not plane. The front would go higher and higher- DOH! forgot to drop the motor to the lock in position as it was set for shallow water running. Dropped it down and it planed out and carburated great. Thanks for advice.

Bowfin
