on a 1953 7.5 hp Elgin the manual calls for waterproof grease to lube the lower unit. I just opened it up to inspect it and i guess the previous owner drained it before he stored it 20 years ago. The case and gears are oily but grease free and corrosion free and the gears look brand new. What lube should i put in this lower unit ? The shear pin i removed is a rusty piece of steel rod, Was brass used for shear pins on this motor or will the correct size piece of drill rod work ?

Re: lower unit lube and shear pin

Hi dinhy
Post the model# of this rascal. I think it was made by West Bend. I am not sure. All these private branded motors like Elgin,SeaKing,Atlas Royal and others were made by the major manufactures of the day,OMC, West Bend, Scott-Atwater, Mercury, etc. Outboards are listed by mod.# and ser#. With this info I can look up the info you need.

Use either Lubraplate 104 or 90wt Gear oil. Do not use steel or drill rod for a shear pin. Find or make the correct size pin. The pins are bronze. Quite often the local marine stores or out board repair center will have a bucket-o-pins (misolainious pins) for sale. They should be able to set you up with something you can make work.

In non-shift outboards, in other words pull the cord and away you go, don't use the hypoid oil. Use the Lubriplate 105 engine assembly grease available at auto parts stores. Stick with the bronze shear pins...may take awhile to find one but its worth it, longer life for the prop and outboard.

Either or will work fine, 105 or gear lube. Try a shear pin of 5/32"dia and 11/4" long. Cut to fit if necessary.

Re: lower unit lube and shear pin

Sorry to hi-jack your thread, but while on the subject of shear pins:

I have a 1982 Sears Gamefisher 15 hp that shears pins at the drop of a hat. I know the shear pin protects the prop and the drive shaft and all that, but it seems that they shear too easily. I buy the Frabil shear pins from my local Marine shop. I guess they are brass. Would like to use something that is a little more durable but will still break before the prop drive shaft gets jacked up. Anyone have any advice?
