windsheild vent motor problems

Good Morning,
This question is on my best friends sea ray. He has a center windsheild power vent window that's been acting up, so he bought a new motor/piston which I said I'd put in for him. I first checked the power with my meter and I had readings of 12.51 and -12.51 volts, but the motor wouldn't work. I thought the volts/amps might be low, so I put his charger on and got new readings of 13.25 and -13.25 volts, but it still wouldn't work. I checked the motor out with battery cables on the battery and the motor worked fine. I'm stuck!! The new motor is the same as the old one, so the amp draw should be the same and the exsisting wiring should work? What could the problem be? I also cleaned the connections on the switch to make sure there wasn't and corrosion on them.
Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks, Chuck

Motor works when you hook it directly to the battery, but not when you flip the switch on? But you get 12.5v across the motor leads? Sounds like a mystery.

When you checked the motor using jumper cables, was it connected to the vent window? Could it be binding? Should have blown a fuse if that was the case.

welcome to iboats!

I know the switch had a ground (that grounds all the dashboard insterments) and the motor seems to be mounted on fiberglass, so there's no ground there, so..........??

When I checked the motor it was down in the engine room and not connected to the vent window. It seemed to spin freely, so I tried it with the lead wires after and nothing!!

1 of the wires going To the motor HAS to be a Ground,.....
I Don't understand your Meter Readings,....
Is there Power to Both Wires,..??... Or is 1 of them a Ground???

below is the wiring for the switch, it's a double pole-double throw. There are only two wires going to the the motor.

wire out x x ground
|
power in x x ground in
/
ground x x wire out

As you can see the polarity is reversed through the switch, I agree there should be a ground, but.......where is it?

Re: windsheild vent motor problems

Sorry I don't know much about DPDT switches - but I do know that there should be a wire from battery (+) through a fuse (or from the fuse box) to switch, wire from switch to motor (+), and a wire from motor (-) to battery (-) (or otherwise some path to ground).

You checked the power with your meter - did you measure the voltage at the switch? I mean you're sure power is getting to the motor? You probably already checked the fuse on that circuit?

Any chance there could be a problem with the window mechanism, where the motor's getting power but can't move the window? It'd probably heat up in a hurry if that was the case.
