I am working on my 1985 Bayliner Capri

I have a picture of what I am talking about here: http://www.jfnewell.com/boat/transom.htm

I am trying to put a picture at the end of this message as well. (hey it worked!)

**For those who don't want to look at the picture, my question is; How much wood is in the transom of a 1985 Bayliner Capri? Is it just in the part where the motor-well is, or does it go all the way across the back?

Looking at the picture, drawing A, my transom has cracks and movement at the
red lines.

The previous owner tried to repair by putting a big block of wood as shown in drawing B, and by putting a think mat of fiberglass as shown on drawing C (side view)

My assumption is that there is wood inside of the transom itself, and that no matter how much the outside is beefed up, the real problem will keep on causing cracks and damage......

So, ultimatly, my question is....Is the wood in the transom (drawing d) like the yellow part, or does the wood go all the way across the back, as in the red and yellow parts?

I was looking at the Seacast product, and while it seems like no big deal to open up the transom over the yellow part, get the wood out, and pour in their product.....it does seem like a major ordeal to open up the transom over the red parts.

Not sure where the wood is but you will need to remove the engine and probably the top to fix this.

You will get a better response in the Built repair forum one above this one.

JB can you move this please?

I would think that the whole back is wood(A). There are many people that have done Bayliner transom's. If you do a search on it I am sure you will find some good info, and pictures.

Regardless of where the wood is, it will be a stronger transom repair if you rip the whole thing out and start fresh.

In 1985 most all boats used wood and Bayliners are known for having lots of wood and wood problems. You need to get this fixed quick! Years ago I almost lost a motor with a bad transom. Hopped a wake and the bolts holding the motor on ripped out of the transom. Motor was sitting on the boat at a 45 degree angle.

The transom covers the entire back of the boat, side to side, top to bottom and attaches to the hull stringers. You could also have rotten stringers. Need to pull the entire top of the boat off cut the tramsom out and repalce and reglass.

This is not a project for a novice.

If you want to see what this project entails, there is a good book "Runabout Renovation" by Jim Anderson that explains the entire process. You can probably get it on Amazon or B&N. Probably worth a $20 investment.
Good Luck

Thank y'all.

I have opened this same message up under "Repair and Restoration"

I think I am going to open up the transom just in the motor well for now, and start poking around.
