Re: oxidation on boat

Agreed. But, depending on how bad, even going to WalMart (or here at iBoats) and buying some of the off the shelf oxidation remover and a 9" orbital buffer/waxer ($22), you can do amazing work. My red (sparkly) boat was little oxidized/dull and it came out looking like a mirror using a 3m oxidiation remover product.

Only bad news is now my wife wants me to make as much effort to make her car as shiny as I do on the boat.

HI Tom
Real newbie here "search in the Boat Restoration and Building section" - can you help me find that? I need help in doing fibreglass work (enlarging v-berth, glassing in bulkheads) etc.
Thanks from Ian, Maple Bay, West Coast, Canada

Re: oxidation on boat

I used the product PoliGlow..My boat is red and was very oxidized. It turned out great and the water beads very well. It's not a wax but a fiberglass sealant.Makes keeping the boat clean much easier..

Collinite No. 920 Liquid Fiberglass Boat Cleaner, works great. Neighbor tried it last year when he was done it looked like he had it repainted

Re: oxidation on boat

like the automotive industry i tried wet sanding my gelcoat. Besides the normal scarryness of sanding a finish, this did wonders!!

on areas that had normal oxidation i just used 2000 grit. on areas that were heavily oxidated I started with 800 or 1500 and finished with 2000. Wet sanding removed all of the oxidation, pits, and roughness of the finish. once done, i followed up with a light compound and a buffer. Results were amaizing!!

I also read years back about using Floetrol like a wax (rubbing on a 2 x 2 section, letting stand for less that 2 minutes and rubbing off). Though this is a bit of work, the results are like glass and they will last all season. One boats with color in the gelcoat, the color always looks wet, thus the shine!

Re: oxidation on boat

1. try 3m polish for light oxidation
2. try 3m polish for heavy oxidation (definately need buffer for this)
3. wet sand- info above is good. i used 1500 and 2000 grit and it's amazing. just have someone clearly explain or show you how to properly do it.

start with 1, work down until you get what you want.
