I have just recently recieved an outboard motor from my grandfather. It is a 1972 (i think) Montgomery Ward SEA KING - 7 horsepower Model number XTV-27370.
I am an older teenager and am looking to repair the engine and use it with a small aluminum boat, but I do not know where to begin. I do not know how to correctly check what is working, etc. I dont know correct fuel to oil ratios ... etc. I am missing the fuel tank itself and the fuel line, and would appreciate if anyone can specify the connection needed, or if any is fine. I need Advice on where to begin, how, and what, or if there are any books or guides that i can purchase/use.
From looking at the engine, everything seems to be in ok condition; spark plugs, starter, etc. are all non corroded. Any advice would be much appreciated and helpful. I also have all instructions, and original manuals that came with the motor. The instruction manual (if this helps) is No. 60H-1099B*

I have very recently acquired a service manual for Wards Sea King outboard motors coded XTV 1969 and later. It lists the 7hp as XTV 27007 or XTV 27007B cross-referenced as Clinton number J700. Is this the engine that you have?

Does the engine itself have any tags or anything with a model number or manufacturers name?

Heratio,

That is a Clinton K700. I have a K500. It's air-cooled on the engine. The exhaust is water cooled.

Your fuel mix should be 16:1, using 2-stroke oil, the kind used in chainsaws, not outboard oil.

The fuel connector, I'm not sure of, since there was one on my tank. I'm sure it fits other outboards, but I'm also sure it's not an OMC connector.

Once you get the connector, give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised. These are really, really simply motors, with not much to go wrong with them.

Run it in a big trash can with a 2x4 as a transom mount. Water up over the little horizontal fin above the prop.

Here's a trick for that first start-up: Go ahead and pump the bulb on the fuel line to fill the carb. Try with the choke on and the throttle set at the start position.

If that doesn't work, put some of the pre-mixed fuel in a spray bottle, like the ones Windex comes in. Spray a couple of times into the carburetor, put the throttel on Fast and try again.

One thing: Don't jerk the rope out to its full length. The recoil starters on that motor are weak, and you can actually bend the spring if you do that. Shorter pulls work just fine.

Betcha it starts for you.

OK, I checked on my motor. It's the same connector used for Chrysler outboards. You should be able to get the connector at any marine store, along with a small plastic tank and the hose and bulb. Not expensive, particularly.

Just look for the one to fit Chrysler outboards.

Thank you CA TRANSPLANT- however when you say choke on - does that mean the lever is pushed in or pulled out?

Pull the choke out to choke the engine. Push it back in once it's running. You may have to run it with the choke partway out for a short time.

Re: 1972? Sea King Outboard Motor XTV-27370

What king of fuel line and tank should I purchase - as in what "brand" of motor has the same fittings? If anyone knows someone who is willing to sell one that will fit this motor please let me know. Or can find one on e-bay that is the correct sizes etc. - please let me know asap b/c i do not know which one to purchase ...

Would something like this be appropriate? (I found this on iboats)

Alcohol resistant 3/8" fuel line with large double check primer bulb. Connectors Included. Completely assembled.

50-20231
Fits Mercury engines: 8, 9.9, 20, 25, 45, 60, 90, 100 hp.
Fits Mariner engines: 5, 8, 9.9, 15, 30, 40, 45, 55, 70, 90 hp.

The connector on your sea king is the same as the one for Chrysler outboards. I think I mentioned that above in an earlier messages. Not Mercury...Chrysler.

You should be able to find one just about anywhere marine supplies are sold. You'll need a hose with a bulb to prime the carburetor. The engine has a small fuel pump on it, which will keep gas flowing.

It's a small engine and doesn't use much gas. A 2-3 gallon plastic tank should be sufficient. You can find all this stuff at any marine supply store or even at WalMart in most places.

You could order it, too, but you can probably find a local supplier.

The part you mention is not the right one. Again, think Chrysler outboards.

Remember, the fuel:eek:il ratio is 16:1, and you use the same type of oil used in chainsaws and weedwackers, not outboard motor oil. This is an air-cooled engine and requires oil made for air-cooled engines.

The connector you want looks like this:

CA Transplant -

I have what I believe to be a 5 Hp Clinton K500 Sea King (according to the motor ID section on the Discount Marine Parts website). Anyway, i sent them an email to try and order a copy of the Owner's Manual and never heard from them. I saw in this thread that you said you have a K500. Do you know of anywhere that i could get a copy of the owner's Manual? If you have a copy, would you be willing to make photo copies and sell them to me? I don't know what else to do... i can't find any info on this motor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You can email me directly at amuzzio@yahoo.com. Thanks for your help!

Andy Muzzio

Hi,

Sorry. I don't have a manual for that motor. It ran when I bought it for $25. When it stops running, I'll get rid of it. Beyond replacing a spark plug, I'm not going to work on that motor.

Re: 1972? Sea King Outboard Motor XTV-27370

Thanks for the reply CA Transplant. I was just trying to figure out if there was any recommended routine maintenance. I got the motor from a cousin of mine who hasn't run it in years... so i figured i would give it a "tune up" if i could figure out what the manual recommends. I guess i will keep trying to harass Discount Marine Parts to see if i can get a response. Thanks anyway.

Best of luck to you with that motor. Mine is just on the transom as a get home motor. It runs fine, but it's just too hard to get parts for, so it'll have to live as long as it can on its own, other than spark plugs and fuel.
