Hi all,

Just picked up an older 1960 Gale Sovereign 35.
I've got her just about all figured out, but I'm not very used to this vintage of outboard.
My question is where do I find the tell-tale water outlet?
Also, the intake for the water pump?
Thanks,

Tom

Re: Gale Sovereign 35 Cooling System Question

Welcome to Iboats!

The intake is the screened portion of the 'fin' that sticks down behind the propeller. The aft, open end is where most the exhaust comes out.

On the back of the midsection there ought to be a large, 1" hole. All cooling water flows out that hole, along with the idling exhaust. There is no tell-tale as such.

Hope that answers it!

Re: Gale Sovereign 35 Cooling System Question

Have fun with your Gale. It's pretty much the same as the 35's from Johnson and Evinrude from 58 and 59. Great old outboards that run sweet when they're running right, and that's most of the time.

There are a bunch of us here who own these old fellas, so don't be afraid to ask questions.

Re: Gale Sovereign 35 Cooling System Question

Thank you kindly.

I had an inkling that that screened fin had something to do with it all.
I got her running (in a tub) fairly easily, and she sounds strong. Just a little more tuning to do, including the water pump replacement, and hopefully I have her out on the lake within the week.

-Tom

Last cooling question:
Is the thermostat located on the engine block behind and below the generator?

Thanks Again,

Tom

Re: Gale Sovereign 35 Cooling System Question

No, that's the drain valve. It dumps pooled fuel/oil overboard. Don't worry, unless you have the carb set really rich, it doesn't dump much. :)

*If* your 35hp has a thermostat (which I'm pretty sure it doesn't) it will be in the top of the cylinder head where the spark plugs go, underneath a plate held on by three screws. It's really obvious because it sticks straight out over the top of the block.

But if you have a single-line water pump, then there's no thermostat.

Re: Gale Sovereign 35 Cooling System Question

Ok, that makes alot of sense.

So what i've been trying to do is take care of the cooling on this engine. I didn't see any water really coming out of the exhaust (on the midsection), and after running for a little bit the block was too hot to hold my hand on.
I removed the lower unit, and inspected the water pump/impeller, and it looked pretty good. The water pathway in the lower unit was clear.

Any recommendations? next steps?

Thanks,
Tom

Replace the impeller, regardless of how it looks. Then try again. Bet you have water pumping after the replacement. Looks can be deceiving on impellers.

Re: Gale Sovereign 35 Cooling System Question

tgmarlowe/all,

i've been "messing about with" these old OMC "big twins" for over 4 decades. (my first "big iron" was a 1957 Evinrude 35, bought in 1959 with $$$$ saved up from my "allowance" & mowing yards.)

the BEST plan with a used "big twin" is to replace the coils/points/condensors/plugs/wires/impeller IMMEDIATELY, before doing anything else (including trying to crank it!).

you can "burn up" a "big twin" in less than a minute without circulating water!!! (i have SEEN that happen at a used OB/boat dealer.)

in my newest aquisition, (a 35HP Gale Sovereign DE, 1959 issue) the parts above are on order as i write these lines from Sierra, courtesy of our local NAPA store. and NOPE i haven't attempted to crank it yet.

just my opinion.

thanks, sw

Re: Gale Sovereign 35 Cooling System Question

Use a large trash can filled with water to test run your engine. Be sure to fill it above the water pump. The motor won't pick up the water if the water is below the water pump level. I have a 58 Evinrude 35 which is pretty much like your Gale and that is how I check mine. With a new impeller it will be gushing water out the screen.

Good Luck
