Hello folks have a 1980 7.5 gamefisher # 217-58540
Started it up yesterday for the first time since I bought it two years ago.

Cleaned and rebuilt the carb and got side tracked a bit with married life.

Any way it started up on the third pull and suprise the s--- out of me but my happiness turned to doubt soon afterward.

After 4-5 seconds of sputtering water it started to smoke a little out of those two holes 12" up from the plate, so I shut it down and thats where I stand now.

My question is did I have enough water in the tub when testing or do I have a fried-impeller water pump or maybe a blockage of some sort.

Excuse my lack of knowlegde on outboards but I think its suppose to "pee" out of those holes?

Any and all advice would be most appricated

Thanks Wes

Re: 7.5 Gamefisher-Smoking??

I was worried about the same. Mine only spits a little water, and mostly smoke. Check with glass or mirror and see if it is actually Steam. You will not get much out of those holes, as the entire shaft is hollow and all the water comes out the exhaust hole right above the prop. You will never see it PEE out those holes. It will be more of a spitting and mist and steam. If in doubt, change the impeller, Sears carries the part still. Around 30.00 plus dollars.

Another place to get the impeller would be here.
http://home.earthlink.net/~brixent/

If it has sat for a long time, I would replace it. Very easy to do, just pay attention to the alighnment of the tube and shaft when they come out. Can be fun aligning the tube when reinstalling the foot.

Kevin thanks for the sound advice I'll get the impeller from sears or brix, By changing the impeller would this stop the smoking? would running the engine now for a little while do any more damage to the engine??

Wes
Seattle, Wa

Re: 7.5 Gamefisher-Smoking??

Depends on how bad it is Smoking. Mine has the typical 2cycle smoke, and mostly out the 2 holes. It 'spits' a mist with the new impeller. I don't think it would hurt anything, if it is spitting the water in a mist. If the impeller tears up, it is within a part of the water pump that can be replaced with the water pump kit. Just make sure that you have the foot submerged at least to the top fin. This will submerge the water pump housing and help with flow.

some smoke is normal , and they only seem to have a little water coming out of the holes, remember this is a air cooled motor. the water is just to cool the exhust
Paul

Prowler Paul thanks for the advice its my first two-stroke outboard and lot louder & smokie than my 4-stroke Honda. I think I had a 24:1 Mix rate when I started it up at first and now I went to a 50:1 with air cooled chain-saw oil and it seems to be running pretty well in the barrel.

Wes

Rookie, my 84 5hp(and 7.5hp) owners manual also says 50 to 1 ,but says to use BIA TC-W OIL Only .then goes on to say when useing other type oil to mix 32 to 1 . I ll stay with 50 to 1 and TC-W oil (outboard-water cooled) even thou the eng is air cooled , by the way you can get the owners manuel from sears (ww.3.sears.com)
Paul
