I recently bought a 1970 Sears 5hp outboard model# 217/58521. I am trying to find a parts list for this motor and a repair manual as well. I am a bit confused about it's method of cooling,I have been told it is air cooled, but I noticed a small water intake just above the prop and a couple small holes farther up on the lower unit. I ran the motor for a minute in a bucket of water and never saw any water circulation.

I would like to repair if it is actually broken, if anyone has part number list for this motor or an Eska cross reference that I can use that would be great.
I would like to find the following parts:
Prop and hardware
points and condensor
carb kit
column gasket set
engine gasket set
impeller???

Here are some of the specifics i am aware of.

Sears Model 217/58521
serial Number 100132
Engine type 643-05A
Spark plug J-13-Y Champion
24:1 oil premix

Certified parts corp may have parts and info.
The power head ,built by Tecumseh, is air cooled and the exhaust leg is water cooled.Water should mist out of the relief holes on the leg.
In my opinion this motor is at best barely adaquate.I think they tend to vibrate are noisy
and underpowered.Fuel system is problematic and the tanks tend to rust.I wouldn't put too much money into parts for the motor unless you just want to see if you can make it go.
I would sell it and go for a 5, 5.5 or 6 hp.
Evinrude or Johnson. All are smooth reliable
proven motors with an ample supply of routine parts from many sources. And they will easily outperform the Sears 5.

Re: 1970 Sears 5 hp outboard

At the moment I have 50 bucks in the motor, I just needed something to push me up a streatch of the upper potomac to get to my favorite smallmouth bass hole. The best part is it matches a 1970 14 foot sears johnboat that I was given. I would have liked to get a newer 4stroke motor, but when a 36 year old motor starts on the second pull, it's a hard deal to walk away from.

I have a 1982 Sears. Certified Parts had what I needed. I called them at 1-800-356-0777. Have your boat model handy.
