    Lower unit causes bad knocking noise

    Just bought a boat that i knew the engine needed rebuilding. 1974 merc 85hp. Got it rebuilt and started it without lower unit on, sounds good, slap on lower unit and has the same knocking noise i thought was in the powerhead.     Knock knock ??

    Have a loud eng knock in a 1974 85hp merc. <br />Split the case expecting to see some dammage and everything looks good! Only thing i found so far was lower crank bearing a little noisy and had a tiny bit of play in it. Is that enough to cause a loud engine knock?
