New to Me 1957 Evinrude Fisherman!

Also, I am going to need the gasket that goes under the top part on the gas tank. All of the eBay listings specify this "button tower", and "older design", well my button just sticks out and it's pretty much flat around it. Does that mean anything or can I just get one of those kits anyways?

2 of the pictures didn't load. It's not carbon but you're more right than I was. It's actually a ceramic seal(?). Not sure what purpose it serves in this assembly, or if I even need it? I'm not even sure what's being sealed here, I would think the engine crankcase obviously has its own seals...

Also, these were knocking around in the lower unit when I took it apart. The nut appears to be for the shift rod, as I imagine that should be double nutted? It only had one when I was taking that apart, and that one was super loose, surprised it was still on there. The other brass part and the...

Someone's definitely been in it, I took the lower unit apart to replace the impeller, and this is what I found. OEM style is on the right, what came out of it is on the left. The pump housing is plastic as well. From my knowledge those were not used in 1957? Anyways, looked up the part...

Firstly, thanks for all the input! Secondly, painting is definitely not the first item on my list. But I am a mechanic, so I just took the repairs I will have to do for granted. Additionally, I know how to do them all at this point, so I asked about the thing I am NOT sure on, which is the...

New to Me 1957 Evinrude Fisherman!

Hello folks! Been a while since I was last on. I just picked up this old girl from an auction for 20 bucks, I expected to have to do a bit of work to get it running. I was wrong. Put some gas in it, primed it, and it fired first pull and runs like a top. The old gas tank even works, leaks a...

    1957 Johnson Seahorse 35hp value?

Hello everyone! I have a 1957 Johnson Seahorse, as mentioned in the title. Carb rebuild last year, resealed lower unit, new impeller and some other random stuff. It has the lower unit shaft extension. It's in good condition for the age, runs well. I know you can't give exact numbers not being...

    1957 Johnson Rd-19 35hp questions

Well, I started her up! As far as I can tell she runs SWEET. I didn't get the rpm's all the way up because there's no load, so I'm waiting until we can go to a lake. But I got it as high as it was having problems last time and it did great. It is pumping a lot more water since I fixed the broken...

    1957 Johnson Rd-19 35hp questions

So I finally got it all back together. I got some car door seal for the cowling off Amazon like @Crosbyman said, and that worked sweet. The last thing is I can't find that huge bolt that sandwiches the extension on the bottom back of the lower unit, so I'm gonna have to find that before I start...

Oh, I leak tested the gearcase AFTER using the rtv and it leaked. It was that propeller shaft seal, where there's metal on metal contact where it presses in. I was mad because there was rtv and already oil in it, but I got it apart and back together and now it doesn't leak a SINGLE air bubble.

Updates yes, fishing no. (But soon!) I haven't been working on it much because I've been waiting on parts, but the last one finally arrived yesterday. I started putting it back together but didn't get very far before I had to stop for the day. But tomorrow or the next day I should have more news...

    1957 Johnson Rd-19 35hp questions

I made a tool for pressure testing the gearcase. I drilled down the center of a bolt, clamped a piece of hose to it and clamped a pressure fitting to the other end of the hose. I hooked it to the air compressor set at 10 psi, and like I feared the gearcase leaks. It's at the front where the...

Yeah, I just looked and I need to get one. I never knew you were supposed to fill up the gearcase from the bottom!
