Aftermarket parts

Anyone have any opinion on aftermarket parts makers such as GLM, Seirra, etc? I saw a powerhead rebuild kit on ebay for 500 bucks with pistons, rings, bearings, gasket set, thermo rebuild, etc. (motor is 78 115 Evinrude)

Seems like a good deal but I have not had any experience with...

    Connecting rod bearings

I'm rebuilding a 1978 Evinrude 115 - slowly - when I removed the coonnecting rod retaining screws and cover all the little pins fell out of the connecting rod bearings. Did it on all cylinders so is this normal or do I need new bearings for all 4? The pins and casings all look to be in good shape.

To bore or not to bore

I have a 78 115 evinrude that sheared rings on the starboard side causing some scratching in the clylinder walls. It is not deep and I beleive I can smooth out the scratches with 300-400 grit paper. I have heard some horror stories about getting outboard's bored over, so would this be a better...

Can I use oversize and normal pistons together?

My 1978 Evinrude 115 recentaly blew rings on the starboard side causing some mild scratches in the cylinder. I got a good deal on 4 pistons off ebay, but when they arrived I discovered that 2 were actually .030 over pistons. Can I have the starboard side bored .030 over and use these. This would...

    Alpha gen 2 shift adjustment

After putting lower unit on my boat I thought I'd go ahead and adjust the shift cable to make sure it was set correctly. I have a selco(?) manual that is fairly vague about this process. Can anyone provide a better explanation? I'm most concerned about the consequences of too little or much...

    Outdrive Ratio - moving up

So I've decided to go ahead and replace my leaking outdrive but I'm not sure what ratio is on it now. I would like to move up to the next ratio because even with a 15" pitch stainless prop I can only get about 4300 rpm and thats with almost empty gas tank, no water, and only two people. <br...

Welding an empty lower unit housing

I recentely posted about having problems reinstalling my bearing carrier after taking to the shop for pulling the carrier and replacing the skeg.

It was mentioned that if they welded after removing the carrier and draining oil that it could distort the housing. Any opinions/experiece...

I don't understand why I can't reinstall my bearing carrier in my alpha one gen 2. I can get to where the top of the bearing carrier is flush with the top of the threads for the big spanner nut then no more. It seems like its hitting something but I can't imagine what. I have taken it in out...

rubber dam, which way is up!

There is a rubber "dam" in the lower unit of my alpha one gen 2 that I (foolishly) removed for cleaning while replacing my water pump. Now I forget which way is up. One end is solid all the way across and one end has a raised portion at the rounded end.

Any help?

    Alpha drive ratio

I have an Alpha One, Gen 2 and need to find the drive ratio. The only stamp I see is DL00075 on the upper unit. Can I determine the ratio without disassembly? If not what do I have to remove to find out?

Motor is a 5.0L, and I'm am considering replacing outdrive with one that is 1.62...

    Ring Damage

Motor is 78 Evinrude 115. Took both heads off to find both starboard pistons and the head have evidence of damage from sheared/broken rings. The lower piston is completely trashed (0 psi), while the upper although damaged was still holding 110psi. The port pistons/head are both in good shape. No...

    78 115 Powerhead Removal

I'm removing the powerhead on my 78 115, well attempting to at least. I took off the heads and found the starboard pistons both have damage so I want to inspect the internals to see if I can rebuild. I have a manual and have taken everything off to get to the powerhead but its very vague about...
