Yesterday, I cleaned the carbs and intake to my '89 225 looper. i also linked and synched. When i started it, at idle it was increasing RPM up over 3000 and qucickly climbing before I shut it off. All of the throttle plates were completly closed. I checked the primer pump and found no leaks...
I recently overheated my '89 225 looper due to a bad impeller and not paying attention to it. It didnt seem right after that, so I pulled the powerhead to re-torque the pistons and make sure there was no damage to any of the bearings. I found the upper crank bearing rubbing against the crank...
I have an '89 VRO pump and just checked the diaphrams by disconnecting the pulse limiter side and pumped the bulb. No gas/oil came out, so I guess the diaphrams are good.
However, I'd like to rebuild the pump, as it's an '89 174879. I know they dont even make that pump anymore and replaced...

How does one test the pulse limiter?
Can anyone tell me what is considered good compression for an '89 225 looper. Here's what I have right now.
Port Starboard

It wont idle.
If I...
I was given a boat with an '89 225 on it that i had to free up a stuck piston. Now that its back together, it runs at high rpm but will not idle.
Today, i got a large clear container to put the lower unit in and run the engine. To my surprise, i noticed there was no exhaust coming out of...
Hurricane Charley Help 89 225

I got this boat right after Hurricane Charley, it has an 89 225 evinrude on it. I had to replace the crank, several bearings and a few piston heads and rods. I actually built one engine out of an 88 225 and an 89 200.

It starts right up...
There's been a lot of discussion of the importance of compression tests.

Just so we're all on the same page, what is the correct proceedure for doing a compression test?

I've also heard of the leak down test. Can that also be done by the average backyard mechanic that...
The tilt cylinder for my '89 225 leaks. I really dont want to have to pull the whole tilt assembly off. Is there a way to change the seal without taking the whole assembly off?
