Would not go into forward with lower off. Removed cables from shift plate, control went forward and back with ease. Tried turning foot to forward position, but it is stuck in a neutral / reverse position. Any advice???

I purchased a boat with a 1972 Mercruiser 165hp inline 6. Do I need to run gas with lead additive, or can I use regular? Ideally I would like to hook my kicker (07 yamaha 4 stroke 8hp) up to the main gas tank.
