    taking apart a steering cable

    I have a 92 force 40 hp. Im tring to relocate my steering cable back by the transome but the spot is too tight to fit the foot and a half steering rod through. my question is can I take the big nut off on the gear box side and slide the cable out? if so that would do the trick.
